Chairman Oammlete on Water city Worke. isard of Aldermen: bir-As there will be no meeting of the board of commislneers of these works until after the next session of the Common Council, I take the Sthe liberty of incloeing to you a statement of the teat, finances of the works from the time the commis. eive siners took charge, until the let instant. A more the full report m detail will be prepared, and I have - e no dqpbt the board will promptly avail themselves lene of any opportunity you may offer to get it before I In. the council. The works had to be operated, you know, for the first five moufAs entirely without revenue, and rents having been collected in advance by the fol. old company. All indebtedness ineurred, except peo. a few hundred dollars not presented, has been sa Did, and there now stands to the credit of the board on the lt inst., $8846 18. Besides, we have - t. fuel remaining on hand to run the works four or . five months from the let inst. The records of the water purveyor for the months of August, 1868, and February, 1869, show a most gratifying result. Such progress has b .t, been made in checking the enormous waste here- c tofore existing, and such improvements in the pumping department, that there Is a monthly sar log of from 600 to 700 barrels of coal-or at the rate of 86000 a year on this one item. The amount expended under the heads, "street service exten sion" and "water rent returned," etc., do not come properly within the current expenses. That extension, however, was a necessity, and the means were advasoed by the parties interested. Several large establishments-the Jackson Rail road, Hammond's distillery, Bonabel's bi-sulphite - set. manufactory, and Bennet & Larges' foundry-had all paid for their water, but the supply was in. sufficient, and could not be furnished. The laying of the connection pipe, for which this expendi. al. ture was made, has removed the whole difficulty, b. and the cost will be returned by these four sub- k scribers in about two years. A failure to furnish the supply after accepting d< e is payment would have subjected these works to all heavy damages. ain I am sir, very respectfully, let Your obedient servant, log BxaXTO Baieo, Superintendent SOFrics CITrr WATEs Wonsp, bal New Orleans, March 9, 1869.
