From the following extra':t from the Vickbnurg
Times of March l'i, it will be seen that Ed Car.
roll has severed his connection with that paper.
In his retirement the press loses a valuable at
tache, and no oqi- regrets the occurrence more
than this reporter. though w re sure that hun
dreds of others will share in our regrets. We
would write an '4frtuary of Ed, dead as he is to
newspaper life, but the extract referred to above
speaks for itself. Here it is:
" The Times expresses its many obligations to
Mr. E. C. Carroll, is late river editor, for the val
uable services he has rendered the paper, for the
courtesy that bas ever marked his intercourse
with its attache-, and for the attention he has
given tol:ts interests. Mr. Carroll has a widely
extended acquasntance on the river, and in the
cities that dot its banks. He is everywhere
known as the accolplilshed gentleman, the gen
erous friend, the c.rreot and enterprising nan of
buainess. The Times parts with him with regret,
but feels confident that it still retainls'is good
wishes, and when asked for, his generous aid.
The house of K. (. Carroll & Co., commission
merchants and trasnfer agents, to whose business
Mr. Carroll will now he able to give undivided at
tention. will probably be glad of his retirement
from editorial duties. To them and him we ex.
tend our best wiltes for the future, and hearty
thanks for the past."
We trust that Mr. Carroll may meet with un
bounded success in his new sphere, also that his
facile pen will occasionally grace the columns of
the Vicksburg Times.
Loss or THE CtBA No. 2.-Through a telegram
received yesterday we learn that the steamer
Cuba No. 2, Capt. Wilkinson, with 580 biles
cotton on board, sunk in Alban's canal, Upper
Red River, last Tuesday, 9th inst. The Cuba was
a small stern-wheel steamer of about 600 bales
capacity and value,- at from $2500 to $3000. She
was rather aged, ardi was owned, we believe, by
her commander. We do not believe that she was
insured.

FROM OUR n aXCANGlE.
"Lo ! the winter is past, the rain is over and
gone,' and old Solsheds his beneficent rave upon
a soaked and soft l];vee with suficient force to
soon change the miserable mud and mire into
firm earth. Rain fell all the morning of yesterday,
but m the afternoon the sun shone out, the
weather was milder, and we have every evidence
now that "the spring is coming alowly up this
way." A busier day on the levee hasn't been
known for a long while, packets having unusually
good freights. River receding slowly. The Golden 1
Era landed opposite the city last evening. She is
bound for Fort Leavenworth, having on board the
1st arttiery. in command of Brevet Brig. Gen.
Graham.-[Vicksburg Times, March 10th.
I he Iiuth, at last accounts, was hard aground
at Hat Island. she will soon be relieved from
her position by a rice in the river, which is certain,
from the influence of the excessive rain of the
last forty-eight hours. Monday night was a rough
one, being dark and stormy, causing steamers
bound up and down to take the bank. Last
night was no better, and in consequence several
boats, over-due, failed to make their appearanoe.
Fifty thousand dollars has been subscribed by our
merchants for the purpose of organizing a barge
line to transport freights from St. Louis to this
port. The enterprise is being pushed ahead in
such a manner that it is bound fo be a success.
The great low-prosaenre steamer Richmnond, over
due from Louisville. bound for New Orleans, had -
not arrived up to a late hour last night. She wae
undoubtedly detained by the bad weather, and
will pass down this morning for New Orleans.
The Great Republi:, from New Orleans, passed r
up for St.Louis at noon.-[Memphis Avalanche,
10th.
Captain Brown, of the steamer Lafourche, in
the New Orleans and Red River trade, is in the
city for the purpose of contracting for a new side
wheel steamer for that trade. Captain R. S. Kirk, c
of Madison, is in the city. We understand that he '
designs connecting himself with the firm of HEw
Isy, Bl;illings & Weymon, foundry men and engine
builders of this city. The price paid for the Legal S
Tender by the Elliott Brothers waes $25,000. Her P
cabin s to be lengthened thirty feet, and she is to
be thoroughly overhauled and repaired. prepara

Pilots differ in their reports of water to Cairo,
ranging fr.m C1 to 8 feet. The channel at all
events is badly duttinod and changing. The Ruth
was aground a second time, and the Armadillo h
coming up has had much trouble with bars and
ice. The advance In rates to New Oricans yester
day is no doubt perfectly justiftlable. F.our ruled
st 40 cents, and other articles in proportion.
Weather milder, and the ice thinning out rapidly.
Anna. Stonewall and Jacobs came iu from below,
finding the ice n,,t greatly in the way. Mild
weather at Omaha reported, while the Missouri is
