The ruling of i former Attorney General Palmer that beer may be prescribed as medicine, will never become effective, Chairman Volstead of the house judiciary com mittee, declared today. Should the new internal revenue commissioner try to put the "medicinal beer" ruling into effect, congress in a few days, will Jam thru legislation prohibiting its prescription, Volstead predicted. Volstead made these statements as he opened the second day of hearings on his supplement to the original Vol stead law. One section of the supple ment would knock out the medicinal beer ruling. Doctors Say It Isn't Medicine. Beer was repudiated as a medicine 'today by two members of the medical profession testifying in the hearing before the house Judiciary committee on Chairman Volstead's bill to stop leaks in the dry law. Not only did the doctors assert that they never had prescribed beer, but both said that in long practices neither ever had seen it used in that way. The physcians, Dr. Howard A. Kel Iey, a surgeon of Johns Hopkins hos pital, and Dr. James M. H. Rowland, professor at the University of Mary land, declared they knew of no dis ease for which "beer was a curative. Both expressed "humiliation" that the question had been "put up" to the medical profession INTERKST IN" ROGERS CONTEST. Seventy-One Papers Handed in by K. 17. Students. Lawrence, Kan., May 13. Lorado Taft, Chicago sculptor, who addressed the diners at the Chamber of Commerce today noon, talked right from the shoulder, figuratively speak ing, and delivered some facts, that brought forth laughter at times, ap plause, and produced a good lot of sound thinking along civic betterment lines, in the minds oT his hearers. He feelingly related his experience in France while instructing some of the boys of the late war, in the art of sculpture. "I was surprised to find that they weren't interested he said, "'in the famous and beautiful cathedrals and architecture of other kinds of France. It hurt me to know that the lads of our army didn't appreciate the an tique beauty of France s sunny-land, When I would attempt to tell them of 'this wonderful country we are in, with its famous cathedrals and, other beau ties,' they would reply, 'Oh, we're filled up on cathedrals, .let's get back to the good old United States.' They seemed to love America. One knap sack I saw had painted on it with a flourish: 'John Jones Clear into Iowa- God's Country.' j Must Make Town Beautiful. "That brings me down to my point. We must make this country beautiful in order that our youths can recognize beauty when they see it. The love of a child for its parents is built up in the. child. Love is a fabric composed of the threads of take and give, and drawn again and again until the finished product appears. A town is the same way. It is not money, but the life that the community possesses that makes it a success. We must love our town to be proud of it. I hope that in the future eery girl and boy can say, "This is my home town isn't It beautiful? That love must be built-up in them.' Taft addressed the students of Washburn college in chapel at 10 o'clock this morning. He will lecture at Washburn chapel this evening on "One Hundred Masterpieces of Sculp ture."
