The dispatches from the country last week to
BradsiruV continue to give assurance that the
goneral trade situation is sufficiently well gov
erned to withstand the effect of the reduction
in Iron. The weather in the South continues
favorable for cotton picking. Wheat has ad
Tanoed this week In the Now York market on
on ftocount of the scarcity and high prices of
all Yirieties of grain and roots in Europe. Tho
Western markets, however, are weak yet.
Corn h&s been advanced to $1.05per bushel this
ireek in the New York market, on account of
the scarcity, and also of a corner. Provisions
declined during the week. The iron market
h&s been injuriously affected by reports con
cerning the disturbed condition in which it is
laboring. This is espicially true of the Besse
mer steel rail industry. A capacity in excess
of requirements and severe competition are the
immediate causes of existing troubles. There
Is no perceptible improvement in the manu
factured iron markets. Pig iron is suffering
from causes allied to that affecting the steel
r&il industry. Petroleum has suffered violent
fluctuations during the week, and the market
1ms been generally lower. Tliero have been no
new features in the coal trade worthy of men
tion. The demand for ocean tonnage is notice
able mainly for grain loading at Ualtimore and
for cotton at southern ports. The wool trade
is quiet, as manufacturers are buying only for
current wanta, but the market is fairly steady
for all desirable grades. There were 171 fail
ures in the United States during the past week,
four more than the preceding week, and 50
more than the corresponding week last year.
A Northern Pacific Railroad car with exhib
its of the cereal, vegetable, and mineral pro
ducts of Minnesota, Dakota, Montana, Wash
ington, and Oregon, reached Philadelphia last
week, and was run into tho old passenger sta
tion of the Pennsylvania Railroad at Thirty
second and Market streets. It started from St.
Paul, September 15th, passing through the best
portions of the States of Iowa, Illinois, Indi
ana, Michigan, Ohio, New York, and portions
of Maryland, and along the main line of the
Pennsylvania road. It is one of the largest
cars in use on the Northern Pacific road, being
larger than a Pullman, and bears upon its sides
medallions inscribed, " Products of the Golden
Northwest," and the names of the States and
Territories through which the road passes. The
exhibits consist of wheat, with specimens on
the stalk, sialics of corn twelve feet six inches
in height, varieties of grashes, vegetables, min
erals, including some silver ore assaying $3,200
to the ton, specimens of granite, amethysLs,
and zoolites, bricks, petrified wood, natural
lime, uud twenty-five varieties of wood from
the Minnesota forests. Fine views of tho coun
try through which the road runs hang from
the sides of the car.
The successful application of tho processes
for making sugar from sorghum, discovered by
Professors Scoville and Weber, of tho Illinois
State Indutrial University, has caused great
excitement all over the State, and farmers aro
getting ready to go into tho sorghum Eugar
business, which will give them a larger profit
to the acre than any other product. On 250
vcrcs the company who have been using tho
new processes have produced 125,000 pounds of
augar and 22,500 gallons of molasses, valued at
$19,000, or Hn average of $76 to the aero.
In the whole United StateB there are 3,391
priTnts. bankers, with an aggrcgato capital of
$114,255,892, and aggregate deport of $295,
622,160, and with $11,870,745 invested in United
States bonds.
The etarch manufacturers of the United States
h&ve formed a " pool " to prevent tho price of
that commodity from falling below a certain
figure.

Two wealthy New England lumbermen pro
pose spending $400,000 in building a railway
into the Adirondack wilderness. The people
of Malone have called a public meeting with a
view of asking that Malone bo in ado the ter
miuus of the new road. The projectors of the
road have bought sixty square miles of the
finest land, which they will clear of timber
when the road is completed, thus denuding a
laige section of the central forests of the Adi
rondacks. The statement of the buelneM of all lines a!
the Penniylranla Railroad Company eat of
Plttaburjhaad Eric P Ostofeft-, 183 m cm
pared with tho same month in 1831, ehowB an
increase in net earnings of $665,650. The ten
months of 18S2 as com pared with the samo
period of 1831, shows an increase in the earn
ings of $391,376. All lines west of Pittsburgh
and Erio for the ten months of 1SS2 show a
surplus over all liabilities of $1,593,772, being a
decrease, :is comparod with tho same period of
1S51, of $931,905.
Tho comparative statoment of business of tho
Philadephia and Reading Railroad Company
and the Philadelphia and Reading Coal and Iron
Company for October shows the following : Profit
for tho month. $1,271,500.85; profit for year to
date, $9,651,553.16; profit for October of last
year, $1.032,265.78 ; profit for last yoar to dato,
$9,095,912.94.
President Yillard, of tho Northern Pacific
Railroad, and tho syndicate appointed to sell
certain lands east of tho Missouri river, mot
in Now York and have docided to soil 3.000,000
acres of said land at $1 por acre, payable in
Northern Pacific preferred stock, $12,000,000
worth of that stock having been retired for tho
purchase.
THE STOCK MARKET.
Rerlevr of the Week In Wall Street and Closing
Prlcei.
Special to The Nntional Tribune.
New York, Nov. 29, 1882. The course of
tho market to-day has been rather contrary to
expectations. It was aupposcd that tho con
tinuation of the railroad fight would again
depress prices, but soon after tho opening it
became evident that oomo one was buying
stocks, and in consequence of this there was a
rush by tho Bears to cover, and tho stocks on
which there was a considerable short interest
were correspondingly advanced. It now looks
as if the market hud cut loose from the rail
road question, and that, if there is no serious
change in the position, this factor may be of
less importance than it has been for tho last
few days. Still, it is a market that requires con
siderable caution to operate in, as ono or
two large operators who aro supposed to have
bought this morning may become sellers at any
moment. During tho day there was nothing
outsido of this buying to a licet tho market
either way. Money loaned from 4 to 6 per
cent, being more plenty as is usual before a
holiday.
