One of the handiest pieces of furnl

is best to do this when the stove is

for polishing window glass than old

to be a yard stick His arm was just

Never poke a fire on top The place
to use a poker especially when hard
coal is used is at the bottom of the
rate where the clinkers and ashes
obstruct the free passage of air
Lamp wicks are as contrary as hu
nan nature and one that sticks is a
luisancc calculated to make a man
swear or a woman cry If you will
take a sticking wick out and pull
out a thread next the selvage it will
often make it work beautifully It
usually sticks because it is a thread or

When you come in out of the rain
dont plump your nice silk umbrella

the water and tiny specks of grit run
down into the lining under the iron
ring that secures the ribs and it stays
there making the silk tender ana rots

It and stand It handle down where
the water will run off Never set an
umbrella or parasol away tightly fold
ed it will split out just as soon again
Leave the folds to lie loosely
Some people think that because coal-
oil lamps often give off an odor it is
one of the concomitants of that illum
inator which is not a fact A lamp
has to be as regularly and carefully
cleaned as a furnace and if either gets
clogged up there is no comfort to be
had Coal oil makes the best light for
reading purposes by all odds The lamp
should be emptied of all the oil once a
week to cleanse the bowl of all Im
purities It should be carefully filled
each day for when the wick has to
draw from too great a depth the lamp
Is sure to smoke The wick should be
trimmed every morning and the burner
carefully freed from bits of charred
wick Use only the best oil If these
directions are followed you will have
no trouble with your lamps
Somebody is always saying to put a
few drpps of ammonia in the water in
which you bathe If yon want to get
told and yellow and wrinkled follow
tnat Ammonia is nne tor
bold cleansing but it never was meant
to be used on the flesh Sal soda or
washing soda as it is sometimes called
Js much nicer than ammonia and Is
cheaper Borax is better than either
but of course costs more If you
want to see how ammonia treats things
put a few drops on a cloth and rub a
painted door it will take the paint oil
In an instant That ought to teach
sensible women that it will dry out
und render the skin liable to crack
When you put cranberries or any
whole tart berry of that kind on to
cook throw into the water a teaspoon
Jul of bakiig soda The Instant the
jvater boils up once drain all that water
off and put on fresh cold water Tou
will find that this treatment will take
out all the bitterness that sometimes
lingersaround such fruit
One of the simplest ways of rfisin
fecting a room is to pour a drachm or
two of sulphuric acid on a saucer of
salt set It in the middle of the room

If you Jceep sneezing and have sensa
tlons of chilliness it Is a fair sign of
coming cold Sometimes it can be
broken quite effectually by a hot lem
onade Get the lemon and sugar ready
and set the water boiling Then bathe
the feet in hot water or take a hot
bath all over Retire immediately and
have brought to you the glass of lemon
and sugar over which the boiling water
has been poured Drink it down as hot
as posMble You wont have a symp
torn of cold in the morning
Dont throw away the bite of strins
Make them into a ball and keen In a
box in the kitchen String is alwavs
in requirement and seldom at hand
If you like toasted cheese here Is a
very nice way to prepare it Cut two
ounces of cheese Into thin slices or if
you have some crumbs of dried stale
cheese use that Put it in a pan with
a gill of mik and set on the stove to
simmer until the cheese is dissolved
Set off to cool a little then add the
yolk of one egg well beaten Pour the
mixture into a shallow tin and brown
in the oven
So few cooks or housekeepers seem
to know that every article of food
nhould be kept covcied until It appears
on the table Milk and butter for in
stance should be kept in air tight ves
eels and kept covered They both take
up every odor flying In the air and ar
positively harmful to lake into tin
stomach after standing uncovered for
an hour or two for not only odors but
the animalcule that fill the air arc
attracted to milk and butter Uncov
ered jelly is a menace to family health
It is in gelatin jelly that expert bacteri
ologists Imprison germs of disease to
watcli them propagate They seem 10
thrive better on that kind of food than
on anj other yet In two thirds of tho
pantries in the city will be found half
used dwhes or glasses of jelly standing
uncovered
The tobacco worm now vies with thp
chameleon in womans favor only the
worm is ueaa one formed of pearls
its nages accentuated with green enam
el In which are sunk tiny diamonds
and that lias a green enamel head and
feelers finely tipped is ahout the thinr
It is hideous and so are most of the
women who wear such freaks

Dont sleep in a warm rom if you
want to be free from headache and
have a good complexion It is all verv
nice to get into a nice warm bed but
before you do so be sure that the heat
Is turned oft and pull tne window down
at the ton A room is best ventilated
by opening at -the top of the window
because the hottest air ascends i ou
cant have too much cold air in your
room unless -there should a draft
that J of course Is not healthy

It tarnishes It is supposed that the
ulphur in the cloth causes the metal
to blacken Chamois bags are best for
silver
If you want to keep the dust from
sifting in on your pictures get strong
manllla paper and paste over the backs
Sometimes when a baby is very fret
ful and nothing seems to quiet it you
can lessen its wails by scratching its
back A baby is a good deal like a lit
tle pig or a puppy and they love to
be scratched Loosen the babys skirt
bands and with the well warmed hand
gently rub its back and finally Its whole
body This works like a charm in most
instances AVhea a baby has colic dont
jolt and Jar it Imagine how you would
feel if you had tho stomachache and
some great giant pranced you around
in the air or over tho knee
For delicate women who are exhaust
ed with the slightest exertion an al
cohol sponge bath is an excellent stim
ulant
A new thing in household economy
is a sewing machine rug It should ba
made of crash or something of that
nature and about six feet square A
worn sheet might bo colored some neu
tral shade and thus utilized Set tho
machine near the middle of the rug
then you can keep all your snippings
and threads on the rug and in the
evening pick it up and shake off the
litter without having to sweep and dust
the whole room
If your street gown shows signs of
wear at the bottom or has shortened
as some woolen gowns will do get some
Hercules braid and put a band smooth
ly around the foot of the gown letting
it come below the material so as to
lengthen the skirt Hold it a little full
when putting it on so that it will not
draw It is quite fashionable and cer
tainly Is economical If you like you
can lengthen the skirt with something
and set the braid over that but the
other answers quite as well and It Is
less trouble
Never boil the water out of which
you make coffee or tea I do not know
the hygiene of the suggestion I only
know the fact that water boiled long
before using In that way makes a flat
tasting drink It seems to take the life
out of it
If you have only the white glass
lamps and want to possess the pretty
red ones or blue try this Empty the
oil from the bowl and poke a squaro
piece of red flannel down In it Smooth
it up against tho inside with your finger
and the aid of a stick till you have
covered the whole inside Trim off the
points that stick out of the mouth pour
the oil back and screw on the top
The effect will be very pretty and you
can have them any color you desire
For a shado get some of the pretty
crepe paper to match the bowl and put
it over the white shade tying with a
ribbon and bow at tho top Let the
paper swing free at the bottom and bo
a little longer than the shade
Mothers of small men and women
are put to their wits ends to devise
some method of teaching the children
to pick up and take care of their toys
and small belongings It Is quite im
possible to teach children to take care
of things unless they have some place
to put them You know you get care
less and toss your clothes about in dis
order unless you have good closets or
their equivalent and children are Im
perfect patterns of grown ups A
big flat wicker hamper is one of the
nicest things for a childs toys because
it is light and can be dragged by a two-year-old
If you have no closet the
floor of which and perhaps a shelf can
be utilized for the childrens toys and
other traps get a hamper If you
cannot afford that take a good sized
pine box that will do for a seat under
a window for instance Put rollers or
castors on It put hinges on the top for
a lid cushion and cover it and have It
understood that when play Is over Into
that box every single plaything must
go
An authority that cannot be ques
tioned says that when sending cheese to
the table you should always lay it on a
fresh napkin
For chamber windows long curtains
of cream cheesecloth are pretty and in
expensive A wide hem along tho front
edge and at the bottom Is all that Is
necessary though If you care to go to
tho expense narrow wash lace makes
a neat finish These curtains will last
indefinitely and launder beautifully It
can be done at home and is so much
less trouble than the Nottingham lace
curtains which have to be sent to the
cleaners unless you have infinite pa
tience
Dont try to keep white petticoats on
your little girl Soft red flannel should
form the underskirt and you can em
broider that or crochet a silk or zephyr
edge on it and make It very pretty If
a second skirt Is necessary get fine
black satine and feather stitch it with
two or three rows of bright colored
wash silk You can have three rows
eacli of a different shade if you like
There Is nothing much more uncom
fortable than the feeling that ones
hoes are too large and yet shoes that
seemed to fit at first often stretch till
they are uncomfortably large To rem
edy this cut insoles from an old felt
hat Any old hat will do except a stiff
one of course Have tho insoles just
wide enough to cover tho sole of the
shoe inside They will fill ud the shoo
iust about enough and often protect
inc stocking irom wearing out on the
rough threads in the sole They will
protect your feet from dampness too
Take them out and air them each night
This felt sole Is better tlian tlioie you
buy because not so thick and if aired
will not absorb unpleasant odors
If your child has a habit of sleeping
with its mouth open in order to breathe
attend to the matter at once before
that most loathsome of nil diseases
chronic catarrh sets In Any child that
breathes thru its mouth habitually cer
tainly has something the matter with
its nasal organs and early treatment
will probably correct it but it will take
patience and unwearied application to
accomplish It
Steel that is badly rusted may bo
lainy well cleaned by applying several
coats of kerosene Apply and let stand
lor a lew uours and 4he rub and apply
again
Run a lighted match rapidly around
the top of a fountnln pen which refuses
to unscrew It wjll generally succumb
at once
To ward off an incipient cold in a
child give it a good hot bath in a warm
room Then rub the chest and throat
with coal oil and heat it in Over that
put a liberal rubbing -of vaseline Then
roll the child up In a nice warm flannel
that will cover it all over and tuck it
in bed Generally this will break up a
cold that has just started and also
symptoms of croup If the hoarseness
is of a croupy nature a half
ful of vaseline given inwardly Is not
bad
A quiet way of teaching a child to be
observant Is a little game called I
see You can play It and yet attend
to your sewing or any other work that
does not require the use of anything
but your fingers bay to the child that
you see something in the room a
chair for Instance Then describe it
and make the child tell you from your
description what It Is you have seen
then let the child tell you something
it sees and you guess It Is a game
that trains a childs brain in numerous
ways and you will find It will help your
own luinKing powers to keep up va It

non with whom our readers havo a
pleasant acquaintance as tho author of
Inside of Rebeldom will bo read
with interest by all
Mr J S Taggart3 recent communi
cation in The National Tribune reminds
me of an old friend who attempted
to work me for 20 some time since
From his description and manner of
procedure I feel sure he Is tho same
man He was in Illinois when I heard
from him last I have been searching
for one Chas S Bradley 6th HI Cav
for a number of years and probably it
will bo remembered that I advertised
in The National Tribune for him Some
time ago I received a letter stating
that r friend informed him I was hunt
ing for C S Bradley that he was the
man and that if I would write him at
a certain town where he would bo In
a few days he would write me a long
letter I noticed that his handwriting
did not correspond with Charleys but
thought it not improbable that a mans
chirography might change in 40 years
I was delighted to learn that my
old friend was living and I had found
him at last so I wrote at once to the
address given and promptly a reply
came giving me a history of himself
since we met which was in 1865 He
said In part that ho married an Ala
bama girl soon after the war and named
his first boy for me who was at that
timo a Lieutenant on the battleship
Alabama and had brought him a fine
lot of parrots from Africa and when
he returned home he would send me
a pair of the bist talkers His home
was In Oklahoma but was then in Illi
nois visiting relatives and friends He
had prospered since tho war and owned
a large farm In Oklahoma on which
he raised 7000 to 10000 bushels of
wheat yearly etc It seems he did not
tarry long at a place for every letter
I got told me to address my next to
some town farther up the State The
last letter I received came from Deca
tur III in which he said he couldnt
go home without seeing mo and had
decided to visit me but unfortunately
lie was robbed at a Reunion in Deca
tur the day before and If I would send
him 20 ho would come on first train
He had borrowed enough money to
send his wife homo and sho would
send 100 to my care on arrival He
inclohed his note for 20 which I will
collect when tho 100 comes
Evidently ho had read Inside of
Rebeldom for he mentioned many in
cidents that occurred during my ac
quaintance with Charley but when
told the tale of robbery and asked for
money I fcuspected something wrong
I wrote him at once and propounded
some questions which I knew no one
except Charley could answer and told
him If he answered them correctly I
would send the money by first mall
It is needless to say I did not get
a reply but In a few days letters be
gan to pour In from different towns in
Illinois asking if I was a friend of
Charles Bradley and where he could
be found that he was badly wanted
for swindling jumping board bills etc

ments have been held All of the ter
ritory in and around Nashville Mur
frecsboro Tullahoma Decherd and the
towns between tho tunnel and Chatta
nooga and all the country adjacent to
the last named place possesses the most
absorbing Interest to a vast number of
tho O A R boys and why should
there be any reason to prevent the Na
tional Executive Committee or Council
of Administration from locating the
next National Encampment at Chatta
nooga That city is easily accessible
from several olrectlons and arrange
ments ctuld undoubtedly be made for
quartering and feeding the visitors or
at least a portion of them at the Unit
ed States Army Post which occupies a
part of tho Chickamauga battlefield
And then the innumerable points of in
terest that are easily and quickly ac
cessible from Chattanooga the battle
fields of the Atlanta campaign Look
out Mountain Missionary Ridge and
all of those well remembered historic
localities and scenes What a treat it
would be to so many of tho old hnvs
to get a chance to visit the scenes of
their soldiering days I was a recent
visitor to that memorable locality and
am confident that the Encampment
could be held there just as well as at
any other place north of Mason and
Dixons line As far as tho nuestion
of expense is concerned that need be
no hindrance ror tis well known that
the comrades of the G A R pay their
way wherever lliey go and if they
cant do it they stay at home I hope
The National Tribune will at once start
an aggressiye movement to secure tho
location or me next National Encamp
ment at Chattanooga
The history of tho Army of tho Cum
berland Js an intensely Interesting and
thrilling account of operations of
mai army jn me uays mat we an re
member so well and taken in connec
tion with my recent visit to that sec
tion gives them a significance to me
far beyond any other contribution of a
similar character that has over come

before the battle of MurfretSsboro while
Hartsvillo was tho Lef wins of Rose
cranss army tho 10th Ky was sta
tioncd there and John Morgan held the
south bank of the Cumberland Blver
and nightly held fox chases for their
delectation The 10th was relieved by
three new regiments of Wisconsin nnd
Iowa troops who had not been on the
tiring line and were mostly young men
newly groomed spruce and clchn and
it seemed to us a nitv they should be
thrust on an outpost withodt sbmo ex
perience I talked wih some bf them

before wo dropt down ti Castallan
Springs a few miles below and told
them of Johnny Morgan over tho hill
and that he would come and take them
across the river before Saturday night
I said to them Ho will make you
wade hat ford and go up that road to
the hill and beyond but on your first
alarm wo will come and help you On
Friday morning tho long roll sounded
in our camp and in 15 minutes we
were double quicking to Hartsvllle
where we arrived at sunrlso just in
time to see the last ones going up tho
hill everything gone but he tents with
a few lying dead in them I found ono
knapsack overlooked by the enemy and
took It back to Castallan springs witn
me where at my leisure I examined It
Some letters found In it gave a clue to
its owner Ho had hree sweethearts
all elegant accomplished girls as was
shown by the composition of their let
ters found therein I had no sweeN
heart myself at the time so wrote to
ono of them giving her of course my
address and explaining how I had ven
urcd to write I waited quite a time
and as no answer camo to my letter I
wrote tp another of the girls with the
same result I had one more chance
I could not but take it and addressed
the third However fearing -to be again
disappointed and wishing to make this
letter a particularly fine one I before
sending It got my mess together and
read It to them asking their Judgmen
on it The consensus of opinion was
that It was a corkor and that she
would answer sure She did not What
was I to do To flush the game was
tho thought that next engaged me I
wrote her another letter referring to
the Jealousies and criticism that had
played a largo part In her correspond
ence with tho soldier using quotations
from he letters freely and literally
A florid coloring In my literary stylo
was percoptlble but the language was
chaste tho disconsolate in tone boon
after the knapsack was tnken from me
to fill the rut tha tho wagon might
come to camp I never heard from my
letter If any of the boys who knew
of this incident are living and seo this

intimated several times in our great
paper that those who surrendered were
cowards and those who did not were
brave men Now I think such critics
havo not been up against it or they
would not talk so I will glvo some of
my own experience Wo arrived at
Pittsburg Landing April 5 1852 and
went Into camp on the river bank Next
morning at 9 oclock we relieved the
12th Iowa who had nearly exhausted
their ammunition We repulsed charge
after charge all day until after 6
oclock when we saw the Left Wing
give way and wero followed up by
Johnnies If those fellows had stood
their ground as well as wo had we
never would havo been taken prison
ers We were taken thru their coward
ice We wero surrounded and taken
prisoners on account of their bravery
in getting away Our Colonel was
killed also 30 men 70 wounded and
410 taken prisoners After we were
taken off the field Gen Prentiss cried
and shook hands with us and said if
the others had stood their ground as
wo did wo would never have been tak
en and we believe it to this day Those
fellows were not with Mulligan at Lex
ington nor Pemberton at Vicksburgi
There may have been some cowards
taken prisoners bu they wero generally
on tho firing lino when taken I do
not pretend to bo a brave man but 1
stayed There was a bully named KnocK
Eckard who did not stay Ho left us
when tho lira was hottest When we
were exchanged and got back wo roast
ed him so hat ho deserted Wo did
not think that he was brave Win
