Mill u Ittc Success.
The ball at the Olan mill last
Saturday night was a success in
every way. The evening was per
fect. As one approached the mill
its hundreds of windows illuminated
with electric lights spoke of a warm !
welcome. At 8 o'clock the whistle
of the incoming train from Hilo
was heard, which sounded loud j
ond clear that soiheth ng unusual
was happening at Olaa mill. The
train arrived with the two beautiful
coaches loaded with guests invited
to the first ball in Olaa. The pas-
sengers were all in good spirits and
looked as if they had come out for
a good time, which they found.
On arriving the ladies were re
ceived by Mrs. Win. McQuaid and
Mrs. A.'.C. Thomas. In one end
of the spacious sugar room there
was a ladies dressing room en
closed by walls of canvas. At the
other end of the room was a similar
one for gentlemen. The decora
tions were very tasteful. At the
farther end of the room were pa
paia and banana trees with the
fruit on them illumined by electric
lights. It looked like fairy laud.
There were Hawaiian and Jap
anese flags and Old Glory in abun
dance. The word "Welcome" in
the center of the room made of
sugar cane was a sweet welcome to
all. The Hilo orchestra seated in
a booth on the floor above rendered
pleasing music. The dancing be
gan at about 8:30 and was kept up
until it was necessary to set the
clock back to avoid dancing 011
Sunday morning.
The refreshments were served in
a most generous and efficient man
ner by Mr. H. Filicide and his
assistants. Sandwiches, ice cream
and cake, coffee, lemonade and
wine were served to all, and Mr.
Wick's smiling countenance was
often seen among the guests with a
box of cigars in his hand.
On the reception committee were:
II. Wicks, F. J. Armstrong, J. P.
Uuo, W. M. McQuaid.
'Floor committee: F. J. Arm
strong, II. C. Voss, A. C. Thomas.
To the very efficient manner in
which these gentlemen performed
their duty is due the perfect har
mony and success of the whole
affair. Nearly all of those invited
were present besides quite a num
ber to whom the invitations had
been extended through friends.

Prince Cupid got off on the right
foot in Hilo. The meeting last
week at the Fish Market showed
above everything else that Cupid is
strong with the Hawaiians. He
was endorsed by a splendid turnout
and the crowd listened with closest
attention to all the speakers. The
meeting was presided over by Thos.
C. Ridgway who introduced the
speakers. Those on the platform
who made speeches were as follows:
Prince Kuhio Kalalanaole, Sam
Parker, Archie Mahaulu, S. h.
Desha, J. D. Paris, James Lewis,
D. L. Kauwila, Geo. W. Paty,
Nakookoo.
This week Cupid, accompanied
by S. I. Desha, James Lewis and
others, made a trip through Hama
kua, where they held numerous
successful meetings. The party
will visit Olaa and Puna after their
return from Hamakua.
The party held meetings yester
day at Kapohoand Kalapana. To
day they will speak at Pahoa and
tonight at Olaa. Saturday at noon
a meeting will be at Pahala and
, Saturday night at NaalellU.

quired a controlling interest in 110
less than fourteen plants engaged
in the manufacture of beet sugar.
These plants have acapacity of
1 , , . ,
9000 tons 01 pceis a uay, as com-
pared with a total consumption of
25,000 tons of beets a day in the
entire country. This presents evi
dence of the strong foothold in the
manufacture of beet sugar that has
been obtained by the interests of
the American Sugar-Refining Company.

Senatorial Commission Issues Sub
poena Tor Dole and Others.
The Senatorial Commission was
not through with its work of inves
tigation when it left hospitable Ililo
last Saturday night. The follow
ing from the Evening Bulletin
shows that the Commission has a
desire for still further information,
That the Senatorial Commission
means to probe more deeply into
the affairs of the Territory than lies
been generally supposed has been
proven by the fact that subpoenas
for the appearance of twenty-eight
persons
of this city before that
body were handed to C. II. Brown,
the sergeant-at-arms, previous to
the departure of the Claudinc this
morning, with instructions to serve
the same at once.
The full list of the men sub
poenaed is as follows: Henry K.
Cooper, Kred Wuudenberg, I V.
McChcstiey, C. Bolte, Andrew
Brown, Henry Waterhouse, Wil
liam O. Smith, Thco. F. Lansing,
L. A. Thurston, John Kmmcluth,
Wm. R. Castle, J. A. McCandless,
S. B. Dole, S, M. Damon, J. 0.
Carter, Samuel Parker, Chas. B.
Wilson, John E. Bush, Robert L.
Wilcox, David Kawananakort,
Jonah Kalanianaole, Charles L.
Hopkins, J. L. Kaulukou, Lot K.
C. Lane, J. K. Prendergast, John
A. Cummins, John F. Colbum,
Abraham Fernandez.
It might be stated that when one
of the men mentioned was seen this
morning by the sergeant-at-arms
and handed the subpoena, he looked
over it casually and remarked:
"Oh, no, I don't think I will ap
pear." He then read the paper
over more carefully and when he
had finished answered thus, in a
different key altogether: "Oh,
yes indeed, I will certainly appear
before the Commission."
CABLE ON OCEAN.
Steamer En Route to San Francisco 1
Terms May lie IN'Jcetrd.
'New York, September 4. The.
Tribune says: 'Information was,
received in this city today that
Clarence H. Mackcy was a passen
ger on the steamship Teutonic,
which sailed from Liverpool on
Wednesday. His object in coming
to New York at this time is to as-
sutne tne duties 01 president ot
three bier corporations, the Com
mercial Cable Company, Commer
cial Pacific Cable Company and
Postal Telegraph Company.
The rejection of the terms of the
proposed contract between the
Government and the Commercial
Pacific Cable Company may be an
nounced after the arrival of Mackay
in this city. Some of the condi
tions imposed by the Government
are regarded as prohibitive, and
Mackay will probably not use the
Government soundings. An indi
cation of the intention of the cable
company to reject the terms pro
posed for the use of the Govern
ment soundings is the recent action
of the company in sending a steam
ship to take new soundings.
That portion of the company's
Pacific cable which is to extend
from San Francisco to Honolulu is
on the cable steamship, which left
England weeks ago, and it is oil
the way around the horn to San
Francisco. It is expected that the
cable will be laid and in use by
December 1st. Parts of the cable
which is to extend between Hono
lulu and Manila are being manu
factured by Knglish firms.
