MOKUAWEOWEO.
The outbreak of Mokuaweoweo is
the chief topic of interest on the
Island of Hawaii. The telephones 1
are kept busy by inquirers anxious
to have the latest and best news.
The crater from which the lava is
flowing is fifty miles from Hilo and
difficult of access. The slopes of
Mauna Loa aic traversed by mini-
erous uncertain trails from which it I
.c on ncv mnltpr for linrscnifiii nr
footman to wander. The remains
of former outbreaks of a-a, cover
large patches of the mountain side
and travel across these places is im
possible. The volcanic activity is
miles away from any human habi
tation and reports thus far are from
observations taken at long range.
Continual activity will send the
river of lava to the lower levels,
where its movements can be seen
with less outlay of effort and time.
Some believe that the old Bougau
ville trail is a good route to take
from Hilo to reach the scene of ac
tivity. It is a fifty mile trip across
uncertain country and requires time
and nerve to make it. A shorter
route is from Pahala on the Kau
side. A gentleman in Kau states
that with a good Kau kayuse, the
trip can be made in one good long
day. Julian Monserrat says it is a
ride of a day and a half from Kala
pana ranch to Mokuaweoweo.
Therefore, at the present stage of
the flow, only those who are will
ing to take a rough trip should set
out for the crater. But those who
make it will doubtless be repaid for
their pains by a glimpse ol the
Devil's realm which they will re
member to their dying day.
The lava is creepinu along the
crest of Mauna Loa and throws out
a great illumination, visible from
all points in Kau and from the Vol
cano House. It is reported to be
moving toward South Koua, which
is more westerly than the track
taken by the flow of 1859, which
uul not stop until it ran into me
sea at Keawaiki bay. From des
criptions received, the present flow
if lone; enough continued would run I
toward Kealakekua bay. However,
lava rivers are freakish and move '
in their own mysterious way. Such !
activity as is now in progress has1
been known before to last at the
suiumitthreeor four days and appar- j
entlv dvinir out. the lava would
break out lower down and run to
the sea.
