A TIDAL WAVE.
While the overwhelming Uepub
lican victory lust Tuesday wns in
the nature of a surprise, the result
wns not unexpected. There have
been claims of wholesale scratching
both in Hilo and elsewhere, which
the returns do not show to have
been the case. The campaign has
' been a quiet one, a campaign of
education, "intelligently nncl effec
tiveh managed. The Home Rule
party has finally been broken up and
former Home Rule strongholds are
so no longer, but may safely be
counted Republican in the future.
The election means that hereafter
there will be but two political
parties in the field for honors at !
elections. The Home Rulers will
either coalesce with the Democrats
or join hands with the Republican
cause, its principles and leaders
The Young Men's Republican
Club played an important, part in

Roosevelt's will have 325 votes

Parker. Hy refeniug to history,
the reader will see that this was
eclipsed in the election ol U. S.
Grant, who was elected President
in 1872 by four times the electoral
vote- accorded to (Horace Greely.
Abraham Lincoln, in his second
election ii 186., received ten times
the electoral N-otes given his op
ponent Geo McClellan
It is also interesting to know
the growth of the total vole in the
United Slates. In the election for
president four years ago a total
vote of 13.96t.138 was cast. The
; total vote this year will probably
go bejond the fourteen million
mark. Going back to the 1868,
the first presidential election nfter
the close of the civil war, we find
that the total vote was 0,724,684,
so that the voting strength of the
nation has more than doubled, with
