NO IIII.O JUIllKS.
Federal Court May Hold Only For
mill Session Here.
It seems probable according to
the Bulletin, that Hilo will not en
joy having a Pcucral grand anil
trial juries in the Hilo term early
next year. There are at present
no Federal cases in sight where the
defendants are residents of the Big
Island aud to have their cases tried
in Hilo would mean a big expense
to them. To evade this they will
probably wish to have their cases
continued for the term, which
course will save them expense and
will only mean a delay of a couple
Judge Dole opened court at 10
o'clock this morning aud ordered
the drawing of a grand aud trial
jury for the Hilo term.
At this point United States Dis
trict Attorney Breckons arose and
stated that he did not see that there
was any necessity for having juries
for the Hilo term under the present
circumstances as there would prob
ably be no cases for them to try.
All the persons bound over for the
term resided on Oahu and he did
not think that the statute contem
plated that such persons should be
tried in Hilo. The law was probably
framed for the purpose of giving
defendants who lived on the islam!
of Hawaii a chance to be tried in
their home district.
If the defendants who are at
present bound over for the Hilo
term should have their cases tried
in Hilo it would mean a great deal
of trouble aud additional expense
to them. They were strangers in
Hilo and would have to pay for
their board and lodging, as well as
the expenses of their attorneys and
witnesses on the steamer and in
Hilo. There were some cases in
which witnesses would have to be
brought from Koolau district on
the other side of this island. To
bring them to Hilo would take con
"However, some cases on Hawaii
might occur before the opening of
the term," said Judge Dole.
"In that case," answered Breck'
ons, "you have a right to call the
jury at any time you please."
Breckons further stated that the
late Judge Estee had by no means
had juries in Hilo at every term of
court he held there. On the con
trary Judge Estee had on four oc
casions held court in Hilo and only
had a grand jury there once.
Judge Dole decided to let the
matter rest for the present and de
ferred the drawing of the juries.
Court was adjourned until next

1'ollco Spies Not Wanted.
Honokaa was visited by the same
suspicious individual who frequent
ed saloons and alleged notorious
resorts in Hilo, for the ostensible
purpose of securing information of
violations of law. The Sunday Ad
vertiser prints the following:
"I am not goiug to stand for any
police spies around here! Now,
you march 1" said Landlord
Pritchard, of the Honokaa Hotel.
He did not say it to me, either.
I haveliever been in Honokaa in
my life. Honest Injun, I haven't.
He said it to a man who came as a
peddler, selling two dollars' worth
of some kind of dope for an oint
ment, aud paying a $5 hotel bill
and paying it in cash. Which of
itself was asuspicious circumstance.
And the man went out of there, of
course, but he made remonstrance
"Why," he said, " wha what's
the matter? I haven't done any-
"You get out, that's all," yelled
Landlord Pritchard. "You get
out! Let me see your teeth? Aha!
Gold! I thought so! You get out,
and do it quick."
And, as I said before, the peddler
got out. Thus the shadow of Hatter
abides with us, though in flesh he
is gone. They do say, in fact, that
all the men with gold teeth on the
Big Island are having the fillings
taken out aud amalgam substituted.

The ugent of the Mosquito
Campaign wishes to remind the
citizens of Honolulu that the cru
sade against the pest has not gone
out of existence, but is as vigorous
as ever. He is keeping up the war
but finds that residents have be
come careless with the different
containers about their premises.
The Committee is doing nil that
can be done, but if they don't have
the assistance of the residents, their
work will be in vain. As an ex
ample, a citizen complained of
being bothered by mosquitoes at
his residence at I'uuahou and
stated that be thought they came
from some houses near by. On in
vestigating, a few breeding places
were found but not in sufficient
numbers to supply the neighbor
hood. An investigation was made
of the citizen's own place. Close
to the house was found a barrel
used for the overflow from the
water tank, well slocked with
The owner saw the agent and at
once said, "Don't look about here,
for you won't find any mosquito
breeding places." The agent
brought him to the barrel. He is
now convinced that a person must
be continually on the watch against
what may possibly be breeding
places. Instead of leaving it to his
servants he should personally,
three and four times a week, go
over his premises to see that no
breeding place is left.
During the last few days there
has been considerable rain and the
different containers are likely to be
full of water.
"What each resident should do,"
says Agent W. F. Hall, "is to go
over his premises and turn over
each tin can, barrel, tub, jar,
trough or bucket, clean out his
water tanks, etc.
"We will soon have the rainy
season and if citizens will follow
out these suggestions there will be
a, noticeable decrease of mosquitoes.
Each person is responsible for the
mosquitoes in his own yard."
TI10 New Year's Festival of Scot
In England and America the
happiest revels for children are over
before Jan. 1, but in Scotland they
are just getting tinder full headway.
This custom doubtless arose from
the fact that the old Calvinist held
in detestation the "popish" celebra
tion of Christmas, and it became
supplanted by "Hogmanay," usu
ally held on New Year's eve. This
euphonious name is doubtless de
rived from the old greeting, "Au
gui menez" (To the mistletoe go).
The festival is distinctively a juve
nile function, and the children pre
pare for it weeks beforehand by
memorizing songs and making
