St. Petersburg, Russia, June 7. Admiral Alcxicff is advocating peace
and it is believed tbc backbone of the war party has been broken.
Washington, D. C, June 10. President Roosevelt has sent a mes
sage to the Japanese and Russian governments urging them, in the in
terests of humanity, to make peace.
St. Petersburg, Russia, Jttne 8. United States Ambassador Meyer
has visited the Emperor to confer with him regarding peace.
Washington, June 9. The Czar has indicated to United States Am
bassador Meyer his willingness to take peace negotiations under advise
ment. St. Petersburg, Russia, June 10. The Emperor presided today at a
peace council of his ministers.
Tokio, Japan, June 12. The Japanese authorities maintain an attitude
of reserve on the question of peace, for an armistace at the present stage
of the war might prove a sacrifice of Togo's victory and Oyama's op
portunities. They consider the discussion of peace premature.
St. Petersburg, Russia, June 12. The newspapers here are skeptical
regarding the results of Roosevelt's action in behalf of peace.

sought asylum at Manila must not be allowed to repair unless Captain
Enquist agrees to interne and go out ol commission.

within 24 hours or to interne his ships.

over the action of President Roosevelt regarding the Russian cruisers at
Manila.
Racing Officials Selected for Fourth.
The Hawaii Jockey Club have been diligent in their attention to every
detail connected with the Fourth of July races, and the prospects are for

Cargo of Bananas Left Behind.
The S. S. Enterprise, Youngren, master, cleared for San Francisco
Friday and weighed anchor about 1 o'clock. She carried twelve cabin
passengers, including six Japanese, who paid full rates for first-class pas
sage on the steamer, all steerage accommodations Having been utilized
for the cargo of sugar and bananas. The cargo consisted of 4,700 bags
of refined sugar from Honolulu, 6,260 bags raw sugar lrom Hilo Sugar
Co,, 1, 8oo bags from Olaa, 380 bags coffee, 3,948 lbs. hides and skins,
7,329 bunches bananas, 153 crates pineapples, and general merchandise
amounting to $2,250.94. Total value, ?39.374'i4-
There were ready for shipment, but left behind for lack of space, nearly
2,000 bunches of bananas. These will be almost a total loss to the ship
pers, as there is no local market and 110 steamer to transport them to the
coast. Efforts were made to have the surplus shipped via Honolulu on
the Alameda, but arrangements could not be made. No blame attaches
to the Matson Navigation Co., as Agent Guard, after canvassing the
shippers, reserved space only for 7,000 bunches, but when the train loads
of fruit arrived from Olaa and Puna the warehouse was deluged. The
loss falls principally on the Hilo Mercantile Co., Ltd., and some of the
larger Japanese shippers. It has since been discovered that the latter
have been shipping undersized and unsaleable fruit, many of the bunches
of bananas left behind being over-ripe, and others were found in n partly
decomposed condition. Some wrapped bunches of good size, when
stripped of all wrappings, were found to contain two and sometimes more
small bunches, which have no marketable value. Agent R. T. Guard
refuses to accept this character of fruit without prepayment of freight,
as he does not believe the returns from such bunches will cover cost of
transportation. It is also stated that such shipments are likely to injure
the Ililo trade in the San Francisco market, which is regarded by those
interested in the banana industry as a very unfortunate situation.
j The lack of space on the Enterprise to carry the 2,000 bunches of
bananas loses to that vessel about $900 111 freight, based on the freight
charges of 45 cents per bunch. Under the agreement of Captain Matson
and the Ililo banana growers, when the regular monthly shipments
amount to 10,000 bunches he has agreed to reduce the freight rate to 35
cents per bunch. It is stated that the regular monthly product from now
will steadily increase to a figure far exceeding the limit named and the
time is now ripe for a reduction in the freight rate,
Carter's Candidate to Run.
Honolulu, June 12. Wm. Henry has come out for Sheriff of Oahu
on the Civic Federation ticket.
Alfonso in London.
Portsmouth, Eng., June 5. King Alfonso of Spain arrived here today
on the royal yacht and was received with great ceremony. He proceeded
to London to meet King Edward.
The following translation from "Diario dos Acorcs" of Ponta Delgnda
of April 19, 1905, appeared in the last issue of "O Facho," the Hilo
Portuguese weekly, giving an account of the recent royal visit of the
Queen of England to Spain: "When in the midst of the greatest enthu
siasm in the wharves the parting of the Queen of England was attended
by an immense multitude. Her Majesty shook hands with all those
near and approaching the Queen of Portugal embraced her most affec
tionately. Queen Amelia, holding tight to the arms of Queen Alexandra,
exclaimed: 'How painful it is that we do not also go onboard.' Her
Majesty's Dona Amelia and Dona Maria Pia were most desirous to ac
company the Queen of England to her yacht, but Queen Alexandra,
deeply impressed with so many demonstrations of affection, asked, begged
them, not to go onboard. According to said informants, Queen Alex
andra said: 'I have never enjoyed any where so many true and sincere
expressions of affection as those that I have received from these good
people. It is a people with the most captivating smile, amiable and gen
erous, as I have never seen before. All that the King, my husband,
said to mc is pale in comparison with the most affectionate impressions
that I have experienced.' At a public reception, turning to King Don
Carlos, she said: 'If these demonstrations are to continue I will not be
able to keep off my tears; it is really most emotional.' "
Closing Exercises at Public Schools.
All the public schools will close on nxt Friday. In the primary
schools at Riverside and Waiakea-kai, the exercises will be held at 10:30
a. in., to which the parents are invited. The remaining grades will
hold exercises at the Union School building at 12:30 p. m. and an inter
esting program lias been arranged.
Owing to the assembly room being occupied all day on Friday, it has
been found necessary to close the high and grammar school grades of
the Union School on Thursday, and exercises will be held at the main
building Thursday evening at 7:30 o'clock. The program will consist
mainly of class room work, experiments, club drills, and recitations from
Longfellow's "Evangeline," interspread with appropriate music and
tableaux. Seats will be reserved for the parents and friends of those
taking part and as many more friends of the school as the limited
space will permit. The program is as follows:
