It appears that the mint does
not buy old coins or paper money,
except some rare old coins in fine
condition, which are desired for '
the mint cabinet. Mutihted or
uucurretit United States gold and '
silver coin is purchased as bullion. I
The mint has no pattern pieces for
sale. The government p.iys no
premium for the return of any of
its coins ot paper money. New
coins cannot be struck until autho
rized by an act of Congress. The
mint supplies United States coins
only, and not of any past date.

Half and one cent, coppers, in 1857;
1 cent, nickel, 1864; half dime nml

bian half dollar was coined in 1892,
and the Isabella quarter in 1893.

son may buy a proof set of gold
coins from the mint for $38.50, and
a proof set of silver and minor coins
for $ 1 . 50.

year by lightning has become con
siderably larger since wire fences
have come into use in the wrst,"
said C. G. Cook of Bismark, S. D.
"The use of wire fences has be
come extensive, and there is practi
cally little land now that is not
fenced in. Many cattle are killed
in open fields surrounded by fences,
where there is not a tree or any
thing else to attract the lightning.
Most of them are found near the
fences, and it is said that the farm
ers' insurance companies are con
sidering a raise in their rates 011
this account. The remedy has
been suggested of running wires
into the ground every few yards,
and where this has been tried it
seems to have proved quite suc
