.1 WARD OF THE GOLDEN GATE. By
Bret Hat tc. His hnntl has not lost Its ready skill
ot rapidly sketching tho odd characters of early
California dais, nor is tho old charm of stylo al
together lacking, but oven tho sympathetic
reader cannot fall to note with regret that Bret
Hartc no longer writes as ho once wrote. There
aro frequent Hashes of the old brilliancy, but not
the steady glow that once was his. This may bo
due less to real loss or power than to forced work,
but, whatever the cause, tho fault is there in "A
Ward of the Golden Gate." And yet no admirer
of Harto can alTord to miss reading this story.
Tho waul is tho daughter of a bad but wealthy
woman, who leaves her a fortune in a curiously
arranged trust, so that the girl may never know
who her mother was. Only a brief cllmpso or
tho mother is obtained, but this shows the author
nthis best ami tho reader partscompany with her
with regret. The Southern colonel is another
character which hns much ot llret Harte's old
inimitable cleverness in it, and tho heroine her
self, Ycrba liucna, is brilliantly drawn. Tho
story falls otr in interest toward tho close and tho
chaiactcrs behave In an apparently Inconse
quent and unnecessary manner. "A Ward of
tho Golden Gate" Is published by Houghton,
Mlftlin & Co., Boston, and may bo found on sale
in Washington at Brentano's.
ONE OF CLEOPATRA'S EIGHTS. Bu
Tlicophilc Gautlcr. This volume, the latest issue
in AVortlnngton's handy and prettily illustrated
Rose Library, contains, besides tho tale which
gives it its name, "Clarlmonde," "Arrla Mar
cello," "King Candaules," "Omphale." and "Tho
Mummy's Foot." They wero translated somo
years ago by Lafcadto Hearn and published in
more expensive form than tho present edition.
Perhaps in nothing ho wrote did tho wonderful
poetic genius of Gautier abandon itself to such
Bcemingly unrestrained but always artistic nud
fascinating luxuriance of imagery and fantasy
as in these short stories. They palpitato with
the wild lovo of tho Orient, they have the fervid
glow of its cloudless days, they darkle with tho
humid gloom, tho mysticism of its nights and its
religions. The translation by Lafcadio Hearn is
satisfactory, but is not equal in literary finish to
tho English translations of other works of Gau
tier. "One of Cleopatra's Nights" is for sale at
Miller's, Fifteenth street.
KING TOM AND THE RUNAWAYS. By
Louts Pendleton. This capital book for boys is
gotten up in beautiful stylo by D. Appleton &
Co., strongly bound and liberally illustrated. It
is a story of the old plantation days in tho South,
and pleasantly illustrates the strong friendships
which often sprang up between the sons of tho
planters and tho young negroes who were their
comradesand playfellows. Tho.runawaysof tho
tale aro Jim and Venus, who loved each other,
but whom the cruel "Institution" was about to
separate. They run away to tho great swamp
and mako their homo on a secluded island. Af
terward Tom, tho son or Jim's master, and his
cousin Albert get lost in the great swamp, pass
ing through a series of thrilling advcntuies. At
last they arc rescued by Jim, the runaway, and
of course then all is well. The book Is on s.ilo at
Brentano's.
HEIMBURG'S CHRISTMAS STORIES.
Translated hy Mrs. J. W. Davis. Theso pleasant
tales arc not merely good for holiday reading,
but for all tho year round. They aro full of that
honest purpose and wholesomo tono which dis
tinguish all the writings of tills popular German
author, who hns found a competent and sympa
thetic translator tor most of her works in Mrs.
Davis. These "Christmas Stories" aro published
by tho "Worthingtoiis in tlielr neatly illustrated
International Library, and aro lor sale in this
city at Robert F. Miller's. Fifteenth street.
THE STRANGE FRIEND OF TITO GIL.
By Pedro A. dc Alarcon. An interesting story
by the most popular Spanish novelist. Tho plot
is cleverly conceived, and is based upon the his
torical events connected with the abdication of
Philip V and Louis I of Spain. Tito's rapid rise
from poverty to aflluence through tho aid of his
otrange friend is graphically related. Tho story
has been udralrably translated from f-ho Spanish
by Mrs. Frances J. A. Darr, and is published in
attractive lorm by A. Lovell & Co., Now York.
Brentano has it on sale in this city.
A portrait ol tho eminent scientist and scion
title writer, Dr. Alfred Russell Wallace, forms
tho frontispieco to tho January Arena, and tho
leading artlelo is from his pen. It is entitled
"Are There Objective Appaiitioiib?" Tho fact
that a man of Dr. Wallace's soicntiflo reputation
inclines to givo an alllrraativo answer to tho
question will not cause so much surprise when it
is kuowu that ho has in later years been n be
liever In spiritualism. Wilbur Larremoro has an
appreciative paper, entitled "Popular Loaders
G rover Cleveland." Professor Felix L. Oswald
has several interesting pages in answering tho
question, "Was Christ a Buddhist V" Another
notable perhaps tho most notable featiao of
this number of tho Arena is tho symposium on
Helen Gardner's book, "Is This Your Son, My
Lord?" Tho writers in this nymposium aro
Moneuro D, Conway, Donn Piatt, Mrs. Stanton,
Matilda Joslvn Gugo, Professor Joseph Rodcs
Buchanan, and Robeit C. Adams, president of
the Canadiun Secular Union.
Tho complete novel in tho January liclford Is
called "Sar.: A Story of tho Stage." It Is by
Cella Logan. Tho leadlngartlcles in tho number
aro "Interest and Usury Laws," by Fredrlek T.
Joriebi "Tho Women of Louisiana," by Charles
Gnyarre; "Sidney Lanier," by G. D. Black;
"Ocorgo D, Prentice," by Junius Henri Urown;
"How Long Will Our Navy Bo Effcctivo?" by
Henry George, Jr., "Osmar Khayyam," by Rich
ard II. Stoddard, and "Popular Science," by Foltx
L. Oswald. There are poems by Charles L. Hil
dreth, C. F. Lummls, and others, und tho usual
array of miscellaneous matters.
