EXERCISE FOP. WOMEN.
now Thy Mny I'.npltlly Develop Their
nerald of Health.
There aro women who oxhihit with pride, In
sleeveless ball gowns, arms so very plump above
tho cldow and so very tasperlng at the wrist
that they look like legs of mutton. In such
arms there is no beauty savo In tho possessor's
own fond Imagination. Many very graceful
women have tho thinnest limbs. Visible muscu
larity in a woman Is certainly never to bo de
sired. It may bo noticed that thoro is in the
arm of oven tho plumpest women almost inva
riably a8inkingin midway between shoulder and
elbow duo to tho fact that tho lateral and
posterior muscles of tho upper arm are so
very rarely brought into use in any of tho com
mon functions of the ordinary woman's life.
To obviate this depression, which mars tho un
broken curves tho arm should possess, tho fol
lowine exorcise is rccommonded: Stand erect,
with chest well out and shoulders thrown back;
bring tho elbows firmly and squarely down at
tho sides and hold them there, never changing
tho position of tho upper arm. While keeping
this position movo tho forearm up and down,
crooking tho elbow and then straightening it
again with slow, regular, forceful movements.
Practice thlB until a slight aching of tho back
muscles of tho arm indicates that they havo
been sufficiently oxorciscd for tho time being.
To develop tho forearm, on tho other hand,
practice tho following movement: Extond tho
arms 6tiilly In front, then open and shut tho
fingers a number of times running on two rub
ber balls soft enough to yield to tho prcssuro of
tho palm yet sufficiently hard withal to oiler a
certain resistance in doing so. It is this resis
tance to bo overcomo which causes tho muscles
to develop rapidly. Therefore, with tho exor
ciso just described for tho upper arm, some
thing akin to tho trapeze cordage of a gymna
sium is a great assistance if quick results aro
desired. Tho handles of tho ropes can bo firmly
grasped and tho forearms then moved up and
down as specified. Tho same remark applies to
the following exercise for the chest-muscles,
which constitutes tho only reliable and sure
means of enlarging tho circumference of tho
bust. If tho resistance afforded by any sort
of rope firmly attached to tho wall and pro
vided with a handlo at one end can bo secured
then tho development will bo twice as rapid as
if the movement were practiced without this
appurtenance. Stand erect, shoulders back
and chest forward. Extend tho arm horizontally
from tho shoulder as stiff and straight as it can '
be held. Then, without bending tho elbow in
the smallest degre, bring the arm down and
carry it across tho body as far as it will go.
Return, always without bending the elbow, to
tho horizontal position out from tho shoulder.
Bring the arm down again, and then up, and so
on a number of times in succession.
A supplementary exercise to this, and one
whicn serves the end of straightening tho
shoulders as well as of aiding In the develop
ment of tho bust and of filling out the de
pressions just below tho collar-bones, if there
are such depressions, consists in standing about
a foot from tho wall with the back turned to
it, and while tho chest is held well out and tho
head well up extending tho arms to their full
length in front on a lino with the shoulders,
bringing tho hands together, then drawing the
arms slowly back, always on a lovel with the
shoulders and held very stiff and taut until
thoy touch tho wall behind. Move tho arms
forward again until tho hands touch, then back
as before. Regular and systematic practice of
these two exeicises, persevered in a reasonable
length of time, will do more toward producing
a full, round yet deep chest for a woman than
all the creams and balms ever advertised for
developing the figure. To pass to tho lower
limbs, the best exercise is in appearance an
easy one, yet its wholo success consists in its
being properly carried out. Stand In front of
a table, rest tho hands lightly on it, plant the
feet squarely on the floor, then raise tho heels
slowly, keeping tho figure from swaying as
much as possible while so doing, until the
whole figure rests on tho toes and tho
light touch on the table. Then sink on the
heels again, and thus continue rising and sink
ing from heels to toes until a sensation of
fatigue in the muscles of the calves warns you
that thoy aro being worked as effectually as
they ought to be. This exercise must bo dono
with expenditure of force if it is to do good,
and swaying forward on the ball of tho foot
alone is of no avail. Tho farther one gets
toward actually standing on the very tips of tho
toes tho better and the more rapid the results.
Round shoulders uro frequently a result of
leaning back customarily in straight-backed
chairs without first by an unconscious, imper
ceptible movement straightening tho shoulder
blades to a corresponding flatness. It is a
mistake that reasonably easier chairs, with in
clined backs, warp tho shoulders. If young
girls, while they aro growing, were allowed to
lounge a little more in their sitting postures
than tho pedantry of the ancient order of
6choolma'am allowed there would bo many more
erectly elastic figures among women. Warped
Bhoulders, on the other hand, also come from
sleeping on high, sloping pillows, u form of
lounging this time not to bo recommended.
One of the most healthful methods of straight
ening tho shoulders and splno is, precisely,
to discard all but a.low bolster and to sleep as
much as possible flat on tho back, drawing tho
shouldor-bladeB together before lying down.
With regard to muscular exercises let it be said
that they aro always moBt effectual when prac
ticed in light undress that gives free play to
every motion of tho figure.
A specialist puts tho necessary length of time
at ten or twonty minutes, morning and even
ing. These are light exercises, causing no vio
lent wrench to any muscle, and therefore with
out the danger that frequently overhangs
women of delicate physique who attempt the
developing to bo gained by a recular course In
a gymnasium. That more harm than good ac
crues from such vigorous exorcise as tho latter
to tho majority of women seems beyond dispute.
