THE WOMAN AVE WANT.
Continued from ninth page.
She had best know something of economy It
sho values her own and hor family's comfort,
and may perhaps cultivate a small poultry
farm to cko out the limited supplies of Hie
larder, but bo sure sho avoid the fatal mistake
of the charming little wife of an old classmate
of mine.
how tiii: suhgeon's wiru si:t the old
iioostrk. ' .
"Dr. McHchen, shortly after graduatlng.mar
rled a lovely young girl from California, wtio,
having been reared in one of thu luriicr cities,
knew little or nothing of farm llfo, though
n-ady to enter cheerfully Into the responsi
bilities of her position. Tbe surgeon and his
bride accompanied tbe regiment to the In
terior, and when cotnfoitably settled In quar
ters the energetic little woman dctcnuim-d to
stint small poultry farm, with thu view to
raising stock for her table. After a while a
goodly supply of eggs rewarded her anxious
efforts, and sho determined to eel all of lier
hens and bring forth n plentiful supply of
spring chickens. The nests weie carefully
cleaned and everything urrunRed for the de
sired end. "Several days passed, and tho
young wife noticed that the rooster continued
to strut around tho yard in lonely grandeur,
without regard to the important work upon
which her bens were all engaged. This one
sided state of things was not to bo encouraged,
so a box wa8 secured and filled with fresh,
cleau Btruw, in which was placed a supply of
eggs, the rooster, with considerable difficulty,
at length secured and safely boarded in to
preveut his escape. At tho end of tho day
the Burgeon's wife camo to her husband, aud
with tears of disappointment in her eyes in
formed him that the old red rooster positively
refused to sot, butcontlnued topreservea per
fectly upright position, and that no induce
ment prevailed to change his determination or
forch him to cover tho nest.
"A little money on the wife's side is of advan
tage, as it helps to keep tbe 'pot boiling,' and
gives a more substantial background than can
bo usually found iu a soldier's Tot. Apropos of
tho subject, tho reply of a lieutenant who
many years since bravely served his country
at a period when the pay of that rank was
fixed at $00 per month, when usked shortly
after his becoming a Benedict how he
managed to subsist on so small a stipend,
gives a pretty good Idea of tho true state of the
case. 'Tho answer is very simple. I pur
chase one dozen ears of corn for dinner. My
wife eats one-half dozen, and I the other six.'
" 'Have you no servant?' the questioner
added.
" 'Oh, yes.'
" 'Well, how do you manage to feed her?'
" 'Why, she eats the cobs.' "
A HEALTHY WirE.
I annex a brief pen picture coming from a
leading bachelor physician, who, having
pa66ed his thirtieth birthday and come Into a
lucrative practice, feels fully justified in ex
pressing through his own observation tho
views of tho .fraternity at large, yet, unlike
most of tho men of professional experience,
possesses that innate modesty in regard to
appearing In print that in these days of equal
rights distinguishes tbe beaux from the ma
jority of the belles of the period, and forbids
tho publication of their names:
"My professional lifo has been such an
active 'one that I really have not had the
time to give this subject any serious thought.
However, I will state that I would like my
wife to bo first of all of good health. As a
sequence, sho will be strong physically,
morally, and mentally. She should have
plain common sense, with a fair education.
She should know what Is good form and
have tho judgment to know when and how to
use it. Beauty iio object, but that quality of
attractiveness which is tho same at fifty as it
is af twenty. As a doctor's wife she should
know how to say nothing in seven lauguuges.
Sho should be of firm religious principles, aud
of the same faith as myself. A blonde or a
brunette of a sunny disposition. .Money
neither an object nor an objection. Talent
for homo and a genius for mnking it happy.
Sho should be treasurer of the trust, with
power to act.
" A womanly woman she should be,
A woman to lovo und defend;
A sweetheart and wife in one is she.
A cheerful companion and friend."
A Persistent Burglar.
Last week the 6toro of P. C. Merry, No. 710
K street northwest, was broken Into at night
through the rear door and a number of val
uable articles purloined. This burglary was
repeated for tho two successive nights until
tho proprietor thought it time to set a special
watch. On tho fourth nie;ht tho thief camo
back again, and he was caught red-handed in
tho act. He was a young colored man, who
gave his name as George Washington, al
though his alias is Charles Lee. On Wed
nesday last tho grand jury found four indict
ments against him of tho immortal name, and
as there is no doubt of his guilt, a cumulative
sentence will perhaps put Georgo Washington
behind tho bars for at least fifteen or twenty
years. The police say that they never knew
an Instance of such a persistent attack upon a
single place of business by a robber.

Gricvauces of Local Merchants.
A meeting was held Tuesday night by a
number of local merchants to discuss a plan
for tho formation of au organization to take
action against the Irregular carrying on of
business in tho District. Thoy complain of
outsiders who by tho payment of a small auc
tioneer's fee undersell local merchants, being
free from the taxes and other expenses to
which established businesses are subject.
