Pneumatic Mall Tubes.
Philadelphia Times.
Fornealy four years a company of capi
talists and engineers has continued experi
ments with a more and more improved com
bination of pneumatic tubes and electric ap
pliances intended to forward mail matter at
a rate of speed far exceeding that of the
fastest express trains. For short distances
cylindrical boxes, holding about 200 letters
apiece, can undoubtedly be shot along at the
rate of 120 miles an hour, and by means of a
system of quick transfer stations the transit
time from New Orleans to Philadelphia could
thus bo shortened to ten or twelve hours.
The establishment of an experimental line
between Philadelphia ind New York seems
an assured fact, and tho State of California
would And it a profitable investment to spend
a dozen millions in encouraging the invention.
The expenses of a trip to the west coast of
our Continent and tho irksomeess of a few
days' confinement in a railway car are, after
all, only minor considerations, and the cir
cumstance deterring most East Americans
from transferring their homes to the Pacific
Slopo is the delay in the mail communications
with tho Atlautic States, A Hue of pneumatic
tubes from Baltimore to San Francisco would
at once remove that objection.
