V tf"!-- 'lu:iiiWV4ij T.-fctfrykj2r-r; -r- THE SUNDAY HEARLD, DKGBMBElJR 0, lSM. in I IS IT A DEAD FACULTY ? THE POWER OF ONE MIND COMMUNI CATING WITH ANOTHER. l'rolcssor Lodjro in the London Times. Tho ordinary processes of observation anil oxperlmcnt are establishing tbo truth of eomo phenomena that aro at present contemplated by science, and to which tho orthodox man shuts his cars. For instance, thoro is tho question whether it has or has not been established by direct experiment that a method of communication exists botweon mind and mind Irrespective of tho ordinary channels of consciousness and tbo known organs of sense, and, If so, what is tho process ? It can hardly bo through some unknown Benso organ, but It may bo by somo direct physical influence on tho other, or it may bo in somo still more subtle manner. For brevity, it may bo styled "thought transference," though the. name may turn out to be an unsuitable ono after further investi gation. Further investigation is 1uet what is wanted. There aro individual scientific men who havo investigated theso matters for them selves; thoro aro oihors who aro willing to re ceive ovidenco, who hold their minds open and their judgment in suspense but theso are only individuals. Tho great majority feel active hostility to thoso researches and a determined opposition to tho reception or discussion of evidence. A few tricks at a public perform ance, or tho articles of somo impostor, and they decline to consider tho matter further. Tho Geld is the borderland of- physics and psychology, tho connection betwesn iifo and energy, or tho condition botwoen mind and matter. By what means is forco exerted, and what, definitely, is force P Thero is here some thing not provided for in tho orthodox scheme of physics; modern physics is not complete, and & lino of possiblo advance lies in this di rection. Given, that forco can bo exerted by an act of will, do wc understand tho mechan ism by which this is done ? And if thero is a gap in our knowledge be tween tbo conscious idea of a motion and tho liberation of muscular energy needed to ac complish it, how do wo know that a body may not be moved without ordinary material con tact by an act of will ? It is familiar that a thought may bo excited In tho brain of another person, transferred thither from our brain, by pulling a suitable trigger, by libera ting energy In the form of sound, for instance, or by tho mechanical act of writing, or in other ways. A prearranged code, called language, and material medium of communica tion, aro the recognized methods. May there not also bo an Immaterial (per haps an ethereal) medium of communication? Is it possiblo that an idea can bo transferred from ono person to another by a process such as we havo not yet grown accustomed to, and know practically nothing about ? In this case I havo evidence. I assert that I have seen it done, and am perfectly convinced by the fact. Many others aro satisfied of tho truth of It, too. Why must wo speak of It with bated breath, as of a thing of which wo aro ashamed? It is sometimes objected that, granting thought-transference or telegraphy to bo a fact, it belongs more essentially to lower forms of life, and that as the celebral hemls pheies develop we become independent of it, that what wo notice Is the relic of a decaying faculty, not the germ of a new and fruitful sense, and that progress is not to be made by studying or attending to it. It may bo that it is an immature mode of communication, "adapted to lower stages of unconsciousness than ours; but how much can wo not learn by studying immature stages ? It may, on tho other hand, bo an indiction of a higher mode of communication, which shall survive our temporary connection with ordinary matter. I havo spoken of tho ap parently direct action of mind on mind, and a possible action of mind on matter. But tho whole region is unexplored territory, and it Is conceivable that matter may react on mind in a way we can at present only dimly imagine. In fact, the barrier between tho two may gradually melt away, as so many other barrlors havo done, and wo may end in a wider per ception of tho unity of nature, such as philosophers havo already dreamt of. I care not what the end may be. 1 do caro that the inquiry shall bo conducted by us, and that wo shall bo free from tho disgrace of jogging along accustomed roads, leaving to outsiders tho work and tho gratification of unfolding a new region to unwilling eyes. o Tho Private Secretary In Endnnd. MarqulBo do Fontonoy. Private secretaries In England, no matter whether they form part of tho government service or not, enjoy far greater social pres tige and consideration than in this country. Indeed, as far as I am able to make out, tho only private secretary whose position can in any way be compared to that ot a private sec retary in Great Britain is Mr, Halford, the alter ego of President Harrison. Tho duties of a prlvato secretary in England aro not merely of a mechanical nature, but bo Is ex pected to constitute the memorandum book, the memory, and frequently the intellect and learning of his chief, When his employer happens to bo in office not only every prlvato letter and document, but also every official paper, passes through his hands, and in cases of government ministers, the private secre taries of tho latter possess far greater power and importance than the Under-Secretaries of state.
