THE DEMOCRAT
INCONSISTENCIES OF
REPUBLICAN ORGAN
Editor Democrat:
In his "soapbox" speech yesterday T.
J. Ryan said:
"The Advertiser comes out this morning
defending Bill Aylett in a whole
column headed: LIAR I LIAR! LIAR!
LIAR ! LIAR ! LIAR !
Now I say to you that the Republicans
started this kind of a dirty campaign
and are keeping it up to the disgust
of all decent citizens of all parties.
"We furnish the evidence to back up every
statement wo make on behalf of the
Democrats, and here is the evidence to
back up this statement:
"Harmony Around a Festive Board,"
that is the heading of a two-column article
in the Advertiser (Sept. 15. 1910),
in which was related all the doings
which occurred at a lunu given for
all the candidates, officers of the convention,
and all the candidates who
were defeated. Colonel Sam Parker
presided and Kuhio was one of the
principal guests. Among other things,
the following is reported:
THE SHORT AND UGLY.
" 'Billy' Iloogs, when called upon,
arose with alacrity and proceeded to deliver
an exposition of the motives of
Link McCandless as he saw them. Mc-Candless,
he said, is always posing as
the great friend of the Ilawaiians and
is always ready to shed tears over them.
But McCandless' motives are purely
selfish. All he thinks of is himself, and
all he loves the Ilawaiians for is because
the Hawaiian is honest, trusting
and unsophisticated enough to believe
that what McCandless says is the truth.
" 'McCandless is a liar,' said Hoogs,
'when he says he is working for the interests
of the Ilawaiians. All he is
working for is himself. I understand
he is getting rid of all his sugar stock,
so that whatever happens he will be
safe.' Hoogs went on to state that he
did not believe McCandless to be sincere
in his views on the immigration
question. Further, he said that although
McCandless has given ten thousand
dollars to the Democratic campaign
fund, and it will take a lot of
money to beat him, the money will be
forthcoming and it will not come from
any one man, but from the rank and file
of the Republican party. Iloogs was
roundly applauded throughout his fiery
speech. "When he sat clown, Chairman
Parker called on the Delegate, who had
once before refused to speak."
In the speech then made by Kuhio he
did not deprecate the exhibition of
displayed by Hoogs. It appears
that the ruffianism only pleased
Kuhio. If such ruffianism was applauded
by thoughtless people at a "soapbox"
meeting in the street it would
scarcely be worthy of any comment,
but mind you, this was a select, invited
gathering of the active participants in
the Republican convention the cream
of the G. 0. P., in Hawaii. They sat
around that festive board and applauded
Hooligan Iloogs, when he made statements
about McCandless professing an
unusual love for Ilawaiians when
has never made any such profession;
when he stated that
had contributed ten thousand dollars
to the Democratic campaign fund,
which he has neither contributed nor
agreed to contribute.
You need only go to the files of the
Advertiser and you will find that for a
long time back, previous to the commencement
of this campaign, month in
and mouth out, week in and week out,
day in and day out, the Advertiser has
most viciously berated Bill Aylett,
Charlie Achi, Willie Crawford, John
Wise, and many others as "Undesirable
Citizens" very undesirable.
But since the opening of this cam
paign the Advertiser is not only ready
and willing, but is anxious to defend
them.
Let the press say what it will, we are
not going to stand around here idle
while Bill Aylett or anyone else utters
deliberate falsehoods and personal insults.
"We claim that every citizen has
the right to differ with us as to the personal
merits of our candidates or the
soundness of our platform and political
doctrine. To those we not only offer
every opportunity to be heard, but we
guarantee respectful attention, and at
all times we are glad to have the issues
fairly and freely discussed, but to submit
to personal insults from hired
thugs sent out by the Republican Campaign
Committee is quite another proposition.
A section of the public press is no less
respectable. "We see the Calf and the
Mother of Blind Pigs drink at the same
slop-barrel and lie down together on the
dung-heap in peace and harmony. Their
owners, the Sugar Interests, have a hen
on just now, and have ordered that
there shall bo no racket in their own
barnyard. OBSERVER.
ON THE OTHER FOOT
With its usual brilliancy tho Bulletin
remarks idiotorially : "If the Democrats
of the mainland supported the
platform of tho local Democrats, there
would have been mainland Democrats
down here to assist in the campaign."
Why not put it this way? "If the
Republicans of the mainland supported
the platform of the local Republicans,
there would have been mainland Republicans
down here to assist in the
campaign."
The logic of the Evening Bleater is
only surpassed by the vacuity of its
idiotorial grammar.

What disgraceful things men will do
for political reasons. Honorable men
whose word could be taken on any subject
at other times, will lie, deliberately
and repeatedly, over a political question,
will do the most dishonorable acts,
and think themselves fully justified if
it is for "the good of the Republican
party."
