Justice.
Secretary Gresham informs tho
president that the relations of this
government to tho Sandwich Is
lands should be no longer that of
the big boy to the littlo one, but
of neighbor to neighbor, and
that tho interference of this
country with Hawaii has been
unjust. Ho advises a change of
front, and with reasons. Tho
Sandwich Islands are an inde
pendent nation. They -should bo
continued as such. . Tho federal
government has no business to
assume authority thero, and no
possible excuse kr attempt tho
annexation of that country to
this. "Wo are now the most im
pregnable and easily defended
country in tho world. Tho seas
guard us on tho east and west,
the climate on tho north and
south. Eternal peace is onrs if
an itch for territory does not
embroil us in foreign entangle
ments. Tho annexation of Ha
waii would be tho excuse for tho
annexation of other islands until ,
like England, avo would have to
fight everything and maintain a
navy and army to hold our useless
island possessions. Hawaii is no
use to us, and the course have
been from the staxt, bauds afL.
It is time to adopt that poliey
now, and let the little nation rulo
itself. Bradford Era.
