It is greatly doubted whether vac
cination is a protection against
small-pox. Tho stntutics of the
London Metropolitan hospitals go
far to show that it is not. Out of
15,171 small-pox cases, from 1876
to 1880, no less than 11,4)2 woroof
persons who had been vaccinated.
But oven this- is not conclusive
against tho efficacy of vaccination.
It is well-known that tho human
system undergoes a thorough change
every few years. Not a particlo
that existed in tho boby seven years
ago forms a component part of it
now. With such a change it is ab
surd to expect that a single vaccina
tion in early infancy can bo perpe
tually effectual throughout life. The
propriety of repeating it at various
periods of life is thus evident.
Though it may bo well doubted
whether vaccination bo an entire
preventive against small-pox, wo
think it is clearly established that it
greatly modifies its effects. Those
who have been vaccinated are not
so much affected by small-pox as
those who have not. They are moro
likely to recover, and aro not so
greatly marked in person by tho
disease. This result alone is suffi
cient to commend vaccination to
tho prudent. Then the opinion of
the most eminent physicians is un
animous in its favor. There is no
danger in getting vaccinated, and
there is moro inconvenience than
pain, or trouble, connected with it.
That, however, is inconsiderable,
and should never prevent any one
from getting it done. The moro
one is affected by the vaccination
the more ho stood in need of it be
ing done, and the worse ho would
have been, with small-pox had he
taken the disease without being vac
cinated. We would certainly say to
all Get vaccinated. If it docs no
good, it will do no ill, and carries
with it besides a great relief to tho
mind, which of itself is a consider
able protection against the disease.
