1 never see 'a foolish boy'pufling
nwny at a poisonous cigarette with
out recalling a visit I onco paid a
cigarette factory. Whew! I wouldn't
write or, rather, you wouldn't dare
print what I saw. Dirty butts of
cigars fresh from the filth of tho
muddy streets arc the cleanest and
nicest of the material used in com
piling these precious roads to ruin.
Cigarette smoking is n dangerous
vice, for itgrows upon one. There
was a timo when cigarette smoking
was confined almost entirely to
Cubans, who know wiiat good to
bacco .was and made their own
cigarettes. Gradually the habit
spread. Dealers followed suit. Mak
ers became- unscrupulous. Little
dirty boys were sent out to pick up
cigar stumps. Other equally dis
gusting material was also utilized.
Upturn was mauo to do duty, iiiicnp
paper took the place of rice paper.
I wish boys could see tho stuff their
paper is made from. Wouldn't it
turn their little stomachs? I trow, I
trow. Tho cheap paper, tho old
stumps, the opium and the chom
icals used .to make them "strong"
deserve to bo shown up. Parents
have no influence with their sons.
Why not? Bocauso thoy smoke
cigars and pipes themsolvos. The
boys charge all tho good advice
they get to their fathers' desire to
keep them down. There is but one
way to deal with American boysjj
Reason with them through their
eyes. If every nicotined stomaoh
was made publicj if every timo a
fellow died of too much cigarette
the fact was made known, if "the
proud boys could bo shown a rag
factory and a stump grindery, it
seems to mo tho cigarette business
would be wound up' very soon.
This is. one of in)' hobbies ; I wish
it were that of everybody .-
