KghUngf thBaciprocity treaty,
Nfcw YocttrirFbruary'18Un3a:hq
Graphic, has tho following from
Viwlnngtpn on the Hawaiian sugar,
question:" ,A dotcrniincd onslaught
is uuing made - on tiie - Hawaiian
Treaty, The Louisiana sugar plant
ers have Aintcrested their representa
tives to a man, Democrats and Re
publicans, in behalf of the 'move-,
mmit to terminate tho treaty. ' The
Democratic members -hro found
arguing with tho Foreign, Affairs
Committee, against free sugar, and
arc as urgent for a tarriff as ever
Judge Kelloy was known tobo In
the height of a company. It is alleg
ed that the HavemeyerB are opposed
to tho treaty because they naturally
debire tho removal of competition in
tho business of sucar refining. It is
said, indeed, that thoy aro at the
bottom of the agitation in the East.
The parties who aro opposed to a
c ontinuancc of the treaty are having
a &erics of hearings before tho Com
mittee on Foreign Affairs, A vast
array of statistics have been present
ed to show that the Government is
losing largo amounts of money in
the customs every year; that more
sugar is being importc from tho
Hawaiian Islands under tho treaty
than tho Islands could possibly pro
duce, and that no substantial bene
fit is being done to American indus
try. It is alleged that fully three
quarters of the sugar imported free
from Hawaii comes from China, and
its importation free is a fraud.
