A littlo child, about two years
old, unnblo to toll his name or who
he belonged to, was found by a po
liceman yestetday, toddling about
noar the junction of Fort and Bere
tania streets. Tho policeman took
tho waif to tho station house, from
whence Doputy -Marshal Dayton
telephoned tho faot to the Central
office. Meantime the little fellow
bcemcd to be at homo and quite con
tented in his now quarters. In about
an hour's time, however, tho child's
mothor, (Mis. King, residing on
Emma street) came to tho station in
great dhti ess, thinking that her boy
was drowned, as ho was known to
be- fond of playing in the water, and

A brilliant black on iron and steel
may bo produced by applying, with
a fine hair brush, a mixture of tur
pentine and sulphur boiled together.
When tho turpentinejovaporates there
remains on tho metal a thin layer of
sulphur, which unites closely with
the iron when heated f or a time
over a spirit or gas flame. This
varnish portccts the metal perfectly,
and is quite durable.
It is said that the silk cocoons of
California are tho finest in tho world,
but inexperience in reeling tho fiber
deteriorates the value of tho produc
tion. In Japan the reeling of tho
cocoon is so perfectly performed that
the Japanese fibre is commonly niue
and n half miles long without a break.
The art of reeling is not difficult to
attain, as it simply requires careful
nes and delicacy of handling.
