Uow Lnco Paper is xaado. (
Lace paper is ono of Uioso things
over which some people can afford
to be romantic. It is the opposite
of wrapping pajwr, at nil events.
However, hero iB what a Belgian
paper has to Bay on tho subject:
" Who of us has not admired thoso
nno outlines and wondrous paper
arabesques which cover tho smallest
box of confectionery, and mako tho
contents a hundred times more ap
petizing? A bouquet with its pretty
collar of lace, a casket with its band
of guipure, or a lino roast leg of mut
ton with a goffered sleeve all seem
to take on a new charm, so true 1b it
that sometimes the manner in which
an object is presented is better than
the present itself . There nro very
fow manufacturers of laco paper,
and these almost exclusively in
France and Germany. It dates only
within tho last fifty years like bo
many other articles of luxury. Con
fectioners and pastry cooks moke, 'of
course, great use of it; "but buthcrs I
aro now putting their choicest joints
in laco papers. Then horticulturists,
florist and cigar manufacturers em
ploy it. A proof of tho extension
of tho manufacture may be formed
from tho fact that while not moro
than one hundred thousand francs'
worth was turned out in Paris somo
thirty ycais ago, it is now Bold to
the yearly value of from six hundred
thousand to soven hundred thousand
francs. It is exported all over the
world, but principally to North and
South America.. Next in order
come England, Spain, Italy, Russia,
Austria, etc. The material is rather
costly, and tho paper has to bo speci
ally prepared by rubbing each. sheet
on both sides with soap powdar, so
that they may easily separate.
Eight sheets nro put on the matrix,
and then tho work girl beats with a
small hammer until the design is cut
out. Thirty blows aro necessary to
out ten squares centimetres. Efforts
have been made to cut the paper with
one stroke, but thoy have been un
successful, and tho little lead ham
mers have to be retained. The little
boxes for fruits and tcrrines, etc.,
are made, however, by machinery,
but only within the last four years ;
and as they are fifty per cent, cheap
er a great many of them aro sold."
