Paris . lias always beon widely
famed for its wonderful svstom of
police espionage, it heiug absolutely
iinimssihle to hide from the eyes of
tiio law. In the reign or Louis XV.,
M. do Sarttnc, the lieutenant-general
of police, made the following curious
wagor : Ho was remarking one night
that nobody could leave or outer
Pni is without his knowing it. The
Duke do Chevreusc, who was present
undertook to come to Paris ami spend
a week there without the lieutenant
general being any tho wiser, and he
backed this vauiit by n bet of thou
sand louis". M. dc Sartinc took the
bet, and tho Duke was allowed two
years in which to win his wager if he
could. .During tins tunc tho Duke
frequently camo to Paris in all sorts
of disguises and undor a variety of
names, but no sooner had lie settled
at an .inn than he received a note
from tile lieutenant-general compli
menting him upon his arrival. At
last tho Duke came into Paris dis
guised as a decrepit old woman sell

bled through tho gates when a man
touched his hat and handed him a
letter, id which M.de Sartino begged
for tho honor of his company at din
ner, disguise and all. Tho Duke
paid his wager, but he was so much
mortified that he dismissed nil his
servants, and fiom that time would
