WEDNESDAY, APRIL 2G, 1882.
Modern London is built on tho
dobris of tho London of tho times of
Julius Crcsar and Agricola, and it
is by no means unfrcqucntly that
cightcon hundrod-year old relics of
tho Roman town aro found many
feot below tho surfaco of tho exist
ing streets. Thoro was a rioh find
recently in tho vicinity of Warwick
Square, at tho depth of nineteen feet.
The most interesting relio that came
to light wasa hitherto unknown coin,
of tho year fifty, which lay alongside
of about a dozen urns containing
the products of cremation. Think
of tho pangs whloh the dying would
have inflicted on these ancients if
they had known that their ashos
would be soen and handled by an
unknown race eighteen centuries and
a half, nearly, after their demise!
Tho most aristocratic urn was of
glass and fifteen inches high. Well
executed leaden pots inclosed seve
ral of these depositories, and roofing
tiles the rest. Tho use of load as
well as of tin, by tho way, has
great antiquity in Britain. Herodo
tus speaks of the production of tin
there. Emblems of more or less
significance touching the future state
appeared on some of the receptacles.
Along with tho coin of tho year fifty,
were others of dates between forty
six and three hundred. But the
Romans left something beside these
useless things to bo remembered by.
They introduced into Great Britain
its chestnut, walnut, pcaoh, pear and
How to Train a Child Mentally.
Children think mucli more deeply
than wo imagine; we should there
fore answer their questions to the
best of our ability, unless evidently
asked in a spirit of frivolity, and try
to explain to them reason for things
they see occurring around them, and
for the acts which you your-self per
form. But gain their confidence in
every way in your power. A mother
should be more of a monitor than a
tcaoher, or rather she ought to bo
both combined. You like to see
your boy clever doubtless, but do
not make a show child of him. Do
not even let him know you think
him clever, and discourage all pert
ncss in conversation, for this too
often borders .on impertinence.
Never permit him to contradict you.
Jf he contradicts his mother, may he
not, when old enough to go out, be
guilty at table of very great rude
ness? At the same time, mothers
should never deserve contradiction.
When you have occasion to reprove,
beware of doing so angrily. It is
far better to speak gently and make
the child feel ashamed of himself,
because shame breeds sorrow and
contrition, and this in its turn the
desire to behavo for better in tho
tune to come. Scotch American
