A OHEISTMAS JOURNEY
BY I. ItlCItAItnSUK.
"Oh, auntie, come and Hit down 1,
cried Blanche, brightly rising, and
drawing forward a chair. "Have
you got any news to regale ub with?
Vo aro moped to death, are wo not,
Amelia, this dismally wet day?"
"I am never moped with proper,
occupation," returned Amelia, vir
tuously drawing forth a few yards of
hideous crewel work, and begin
ning to stitch with severity.
'"Ah your mind is so well regulat
ed!" said her cousin, with a saucy
smile, leaning back in her chair, and
clasping her hands behind hur head.
''Her straight, graceful figure
looked well in the careless attitude ;
her pretty auburn hair shone richly
ngainst the faded old cushion it
leaned upon ; and her bright, winsome
face seemed well-nigh irresistible in
its pieplant, glowing beauty.
Amelia sat up primly, and with
uniimiablo expression, and remarked,
" What horrid attitudes you throw
yourself into, Blanche!"
UI have n little plan for you,
dear," said Mrs. Lother, lying her
bund caressingly on that of her niece.
" My cousins, tlio Hartopmans, arc
extremely anxious that you should
pay them n visit ; and 1 think you
want a cluuigo, my child, for you
liuvc been looking dull of late. I
propose sending you off next Tues
day," sho smiled. " Before 3'our
ball?" cried the girl with dismay
spreading over her countenance.
"Oh auntie, let me stop for the
ball, please; I have beon,looking
forward to it!" urgently clasping her
"Mr. Herbert Fawcctt won't be
hero," observed Amelia, spitefully.
"I suppose you think ho will, but
ho went off to Scotland yesterday
did lie not. maimna?"
"Certainly," said Mrs. Lother.
"Ills mother has just been to see
111c, and told me as much. But what
lias ,Mr. Herbert Fawcett to do with
your,ipovemuntH, Blanche, my child?
with a puzzled expression.
"Nothing whatever," said the girl,
with emphasis, and growing hotly
confused and red. "If if you
think it best, aunt, I will go off into
Lincolnshire next Tuesday, of
course. I need not pay a very long
visit, I suppose ?" wistfully. " I can
come back after Christmas."
"You need be in no hurry to
come back, I think," remarked the
kind aunt. "You will have a much
more lively Christinas there than we
are likely to have here."
"The day before Christinas eve
Blanche Ililyard started on her
journey. The much-talked of ball
was to take place at her aunt's two
days after her departure, and the
mucli-talk-of uncle, the millionaire,
was to arrive tlio very day she left.
But there was no lighting against
Mrs. Lothcr's decree. That worthy
lady had managed two husbands,
and was well practiced in all skill and
mana'iivre requisite for obtaining her
own way under every circumstance.
Sho was a willow now, and being
but slenderly provided for, was glad
to include in her household Blanche
Ililyard (who was no near relation of
her own being in reality but the niece
of her ili-rft husband), because
Blanche Ililyard paid for her main
tenance. (To be continued)
