Eat-Killincr" Contract
A Paris correspondent savs ' the
Government has just entered into a
singular .contract?- namely, to destroy
tne rats in tne abattories. it is esti
mated that the damage done to the
buildings alone by these animals
amount to 'the sum of fifty thousand
' francs a year. Every' kind of trap
or poison invented to get rid of these
ratshas proved uieffectnaL The
,only successful way yet found is by
hunting themwith rat terriers. Meat
and other bait is placed where the
rats arc sure to come, and at a'glven
time the holes' from which they issue
are, stopped up. ffho dogs are then
let loose, ,,A fearful carnage ensues,
in which the dogs arc not always the
victors, as these rats arc very fierce.
The contractor gctspne sou per dead
rat. Give a Yankee that contract
and he would, see to "it that tlie sup
ply of rats was nofrr'cxhnustcd as
lopg as rodents were to- be found
anywhere in France. ' '
