The. homo SftUo famous Ohio
giants, Mr. and Mrs. Bates, is an
architectural curiosity. A door that
is sis feet sir inches 'high. is a large
sizedopening in the'side of n house
that is a dwelling house, not a
cathedral. But the doors in the
domicile of -the Bates giants arc' ten
feet liigh, and te knobs arc nearly
as high as the reporter' s-hcad. The
house was built by Capt. Bates in
1876," and' is elegantly furnished. 'In
the main building on the ground
floor are,' beside the. spacuous hall,
the bed-chamber of the giants, a
sitting-room and a parlor. The
couch upon which the big couple
eleep was made expressly for them,
and it is a curiosity to look at. It
is extensive enough to give the great
people room to stretch in, aud it
looks ''as big as an ordinary-sized
floor. ' It "is really ten feet long,
vide in proportion, and about twice
as high as a common bed. The
magnificent dressing case is also a
huge affair, with a glass upon it
nearly as big as the side of a house.
In the sitting room is a piano of or
dinary size Itself, but it is mounted
on blocks two feet high, so that the
instrument is away up in the air, out
of the reach of common folks. There
are two rocking-chairs in this, roomj
that are so large that an ordinary
man must eUtab into, them as though
he wos'a child. 'Naturally, it costs
n great deal for these people to livoj
'as they'must payan exorbitant price
for everything ' they wear. For 'in
stant, , it costs the Captain thirty
dollars a, pair 'for boots. It is a
most' astonishing sight to come
across the two gaint out for a drive.
City folks who have .seen the ponder
ous wagons with wheels reaching to
the second story of a house, used to
haul stones weighting tons and tons,
can form an idea of the vehicle used.
It is pulled by six stout Norman
horses,' and it is enough to make a
man think he has got'em, sure, to
suddenly meet such n spectacles on
the road out in the country. Pass
ing wagon 'have to let the rails down
and drive into the adjoining fields
until the giants, go by.
Bloodhoundi in the Bastion Army.
The "Russians lmvo strengthened
their army by the novel addition to
each company .of a pack of powerful
and carefully trained dogs. These
watchful animals are sent out with
the sentinels on -picket duties, where
their sharp ears and still keener
scent will prove an impregnable
barriers to the lurking spies of the
enemy.. The, dope used are a
species of bloodhound from the Ural
Mountains. The dog; is selected be
cause pf' its habitual 'silence. It
growls,;but never -barks, a matter of
the first importance to soldiers near
an enemy s camp, xne urai uouna
ia rriftoil with an exccedlmrlv fine
sense of smell, keen ears, and Is ever
alert. .Most comfortable ol all to
tlin lmiplv nickct. tlie dos is said to
be especially courageous in defend-.
ing bis master, it is curious time,
with the '-example of the King
Charles spaniels before us, no one
thought before of uising these intelli
gent animals as sentinels. The
value of the plan is self-evident.
The Muscovites have gone still far
tlinr and ore troiiiincr swift hounds.
m well as tbefee same Ural dogs, to
act au despatch bearers much as
flm rmrrtar nfrreotu were emtilovcd in
1871. They cortaiuly would be hard
messengers to catch, when sent steal
