A wcll-kuown actress was playing
an engagement in Louisville. A
Southern gentleman, a planter of
considerable years and fortune, al
lowed her charms to overcome his
long-sustained aversion to matrimony
and he approached the actress with
proposals of marriage. The follow
ing conversation then ensued :
"If I consent to become your
wife, sir, I should tlrst desire time
to understand your disposition ; se
cond, I should desire your consent
to two propositions."
