LATE FOREIGN ITEMS.
Portland (Or.), June 3. The large
passenger steamer, It. It. Thomp
son, was brought from the Dalles
to Portland to-day, a distance of 110
miles, in four hours. The passage
over the 'cascade, a distance of five
miles, was made in seven minutes.
Henry Holbcr, aays the S. F.
Chronicle, of June 3. made his re
port of his measurement of the
Stratharly yesterday. She brought
105G passengers, but is allowed to
carry only 730, making an excess of
326. The penalty for this is $50
for each passenger in excess, -and
81000 for reporting incorrectly at
thc-Custom-house. Thus has Cap
tain Fenwick laid himself liable to a
fine of 817,300.
General Garibaldi's will orders hia
body to be cremated and the ashes
preserved in a porphyry urn near
the tomb of his dead child at Cap
rera. The will is dated September
17, 1881, and intrusts the execution
of his wishes to his wife.
A Cairo correspondent says that
he has had an interview with Arnbi
Pasha, who stated that he cared little
for England's promises and threats,
and would repel European aggression
with his whole strength. Heavy guns
arc going into the earthworks erected
around the,hnrbor of Alexandria.
Calcutta, June 5. It is stated
that the Khonds, an aboriginal tribe
in the Central Provinces, have taken
Bhowra Patra, the chief town of a
tribe called the Cultahs, whom the
Khonds accuse of agrarian encroach
ments. They robbed the treasury
and murdered over four hundred
people. Portion of the hair and
flesh of the victims were distributed
among the Hill Khonds to induce
them to join the revolt.
