The Nihilist Women.
The remarkable types of Nihilist
women arc well-known. Vera Sas
Biilitch, whose shot inaugurated ter
rorism, was the most modest of her
sex. In tho court room she blushed
when she perceived any one staring
at her. Lyity Figncr, an accom
plished lady and a charming singer,
got eight years in the Siberian mines
by sitting in a parlor playing the
piano for weary hours, trying to
drow'n the noise made by the secret
printing presses in the adjoining
room. Anna Lebedcff, a priest's
daughter, in the disguise of a wife
oj a switchman, lived in a watch
house on the railroad, and was
found on a box filled with dynamite,
chatting with a Bwitchman. Sophy
Pcrovsky, the daughter of a General
and Senator, who declined the dig
nity of maid of honor to the Em
press, entered the Nihilist fraternity,
dug the Moscow mine and t directed
the late Czar's assassination. Sophy
Hardin, who was welcomed as a
shining star in the literary horizon,
wrote a few poems which, though
gems of Russian literature, were
treasonable, and the singing of them
is a State crime.
When Bismarck is sick it is a mero
matter of chance with him whether
ho has an allopathic or homrepathic
doctor. He generally has them turn
and turn about, according to the
place he is in and his acquaintance
with the doctors there. He has at
tacks of "sciatica" and inflamma
tory swelling of the veins in his feet,
with occasional attacks of cold and
indigestion. He doesn't euro how he
is treated, he says, so that he is
cured; in which he doesn't differ
very much from ordinary people. It
is hard to think of Bismarck as a
patient: as an impatient lie has al
ways proved an immense success.
