SATURDAY, JULY 15, 1882.
Tho Crabman's Commiseration.
Old Qulmi was the queerest fish in
all the odd school of 'longshoremen ;
but, alas I his many radiant virtues
were clouded with a few conspicuous
vices, lie would fish Sundays and
get drunk every day that opportu
nity offered. Well, one summer Snb
bath morning, having succeeded in
lllling his market basket with large,
live crabs, and himself with rum, he
began to zig-zag homeward. Tho
day was superbly beautiful, with a
sky of screncst blue and an air as
balmy as the breath of Araby. Even
the merry insects seemed to liavo
mellowed their hum, and the old sea
mullled its triumphant boom out of
respect to the sanctity of the day.
Reeling up a hill, ho saw approach
ing the venerable clergyman of the
neighborhood, nnd struggling to
maintain a drunken dignity, he fell
headlong, and then the crabs struck
for liberty.
"My friend," said the elder, "I
sec you not only desecrate the Sab
bath with labor, but you also debase
yourself by intoxication."
"Elder," hiccoughed Quinn,
reaching for a runaway crab, "if
you Have as much trouble in getting
your congregation together to-day as
I do these cussed crabs, darned if I
don't pity ye!" Chicago News.
A club of "Unfortunate Lovers"
has been formed in Ilerne, England,
and already fourteen members have
been enrolled. Tho chairman is a
bachelor whose rebuffs have been so
frequent that he dares not visit any
family in the town lest he may be
obliged to pass the ovening face to
face with tho maker of one of his
ranivy mittens. The meetings arc
social, and no allusions arc ever
mado to the rascally little dart lling
er and small god of woes.
A gentleman gave a party in'honor
of a distinguished missionary latety
returned from his field of work.
The ladies appeared in very decollete
dresses, nnd as the host feared the
style might shock his reverence, he
apologized him for it, saying that
fashion demanded it. " Oh, 1 don't
mind it at all," replied the mission
ary, " I have been ten years among
the savages."
