MONDAY, JULY 17, 1882.
Bed in Japan.
You really do not go to bed at all,
in our acceptation of the term, for
the bed comes to you j nnd the style
of preparing for the night is about
the same wherever you nrc. First,
a cotton-stuffed mnt Is laid anywhere
upon the floor, and a block or roll is
placed at 0110 end to rest ( ?) your
head upon. Then you lie down, nnd
a cotton-stuffed quilt is thrown over
you. This quilt is like a Jap's dress
on a big scalo, with large and heavi
ly stuffed sleeves, which flap over
like wings. But tho dilllculty is that
vuese cnpnuious biuuvus, iyuii iui um
rest of the bedding, contain unnum
bered lemons of voracious ileas hid
away In recesses known only to
themselves, but which only wait till
vou cot fairly nestled in sleep, when
they begin their onslaught on their
defenceless victim. Awancncu oy
tho merciless havoc they are making
upon you, it is in vain thnt you roll
nnd toss and shake your clothes till
you arc wearied out ; that only in
creases the vigor with which they re
new the battle, nnd though you may
spend hours in the faint glare of the
primitive oil-lantern, winch is set in
one corner of the room, and strive
to rid yourself of the tiny tigers that
nrc devouring you, it is all to no
purpose, nnd you sink down at last
to sleep but only for a short time.
You nrc nwnkened again, only to
undergo the same tribulation, and
tho long hours of night pass away as
you pace up and down the narrow
limits of the room listening to tho
snoring of the dozen or more of the
tough-hided sleepers who surround
you, and peep through the sliding
shutters of the house to sec if the
daj' is breaking or not. You cannot
lie down again, for the floor is crawl
ing with the creatures you droad,
and you cannot sit down, for there
is nothing to sit upon, and such a
thing as a chair was never heard of
in that region. You can only suffer
in silence, and wish 3011 were at
home.
Two Chinese who were taken
prisoners the other day when attack
ing the mission, after having been
marched through Jiaiphong, were
shot in front of the Custom Houso
by a company of soldiers as a warn
ing and example to others.
