Tho anecdotes told of Richard
Brinsley Sheridan, who was such a
famous wit in London years ago,
seems to be almost without number.
On one occasion he had a dispute
with the Princo Regent as to how
much better turkeys could walk than
geese. The Prince said that a tur
key could walk twice as far as n
goose in a given space of time.
Sheridan denied it, and n wager was
made. The wit lemembercd that
turkeys go to roost early, and that
geese could be driven night and day.
lie found a flock pf geese, and the
Prince brought his flock of turkeys
to ttic starting point. Sheridan so
arranged it that the race did not be
gin until late in the afternoon. At
first the turkeys outstripped the
geese, and the Princo laughed at the
wit. But Sheridan only Bmilcd and
said nothing. When darkness fell,
the trouble with the turkeys began.
They got into the hedges and flew
into the roadside trees, nnd in spite
of all their drivers could do they
would go no further. But presently
the geese came in sight. They walk
ed along ahead of their drivers, and
never offered to stop. The geese
passed the place where the turkeys
were roosting, and kept on all night.
When the time that had been agreed
upon for the race to end had cxpir
ed, the geese were far ahead of the
turkeys, and Sheridan won his
Capt. Squyre, of St, Johns, Flor
ida, recontly gave to a party of
Northerners an exhibition of firo
fiahing at midnight. Four men and
two women were stowed away in a
small boat, which was propelled by
means of a pole. In tbo bow of the
boat stood the captain with a lighted
light wood torch in one hand and a
harpoon or four-pronged spear in
tho othor. A fat-pino fire also burn
ed in tho bow, casting a brilliant
light on tho water. The boat was
pushed along in water from one to
two feet deep, and its occupants
wero able to see smallest ash much
better than though it were midday.
The glaring light seemed to.blind
the fish, who lay motionless on the
sand. A well-directed thrust with
the harpoon would bo suro to land
a fine follow into tho boat. Many
interesting sights wore seen on tho
sand flats, among them numerous
shceps heads, fast asleep on their
backs. Tho sheopshead, as seen at
the bottom by a trupentino light,
looks liko a little white streak. His,
head ofton rests against an oystos
shell for a pillow
