A Little French Story.
In some parts of Franco marriage
able girls are accustomed to pluck,
as tlioy return from midnight mas?
on Christmas Eve, a sprig of apple
tree, which they put in a vial full ol
water; the vial is hung in their bod-
chamber in front of the window; if
one bud blooms before Easter the
inibtrcss is sure to be married
before the year ends. Among the
servants of u chateau near Alencon
was a chambermaid from Brittany
She was gentle, good-natured,
quiet, pious, tin excellent girl
every way but she was hunchback
ed. Her name was Ursule. Taking
advantage of the dark night she, too,
plucked a spring of apple tree, suro
that no body saw her. She was
mistaken. A fellow servant saw her
and made the servant's hall ring
with peals of laughter at poor
Ursula's oxpense. Still thoy
kept the secret among them
selves. They nil agreed to
play a trick on poor Ursule. On
Easter Eve one of the journeymen
gardeners removed the old sprig of
apple tree from the vial in Ursule's
chamber and put in its place a sprig
covered with blossoms. When
Ursule went Into her room she
could not believe her eyes. She re
turned to the servants' hall; her
face was radiant with delight as she
bhowod her trophy, the laughter,
jeers, and huntings of her compa
nions revealed the trick put on her.
She stood dumb, confounded, trem
bling, scarcely able to restrain her
tearn. Just at this moment the mis
tress entered the room and said,
" Ursule, tho apple-tree .sprig may
be trusted; believe it; you v be
married before Christmas next.
You arc a virtuous girl ; I nm wire
you will make a virtuous wife. All
that you want to get a is husband
the money wanted I will give
As she spoke, the mistress twined
it thousand franc bank note around
tho Bpriu; and returned it to Ursule.
A fortnight afterwards tho journey
man gurdcuc-r who had put the trick
on her asked her in nianii'io, but
she refused him, at which ho was
greatly jeered, nud marriod another.
""What is this man charged
with?" asked the judge. With
whiskov. vcr honor," replied the
