Tho Cooktoxon Herald has been
supplied rrith the followinginforma
tion by Captain Sachsc, of the b.b,
Pacific (one of Hernstcin arid Co.'s
iradlug fleet) as to' recent outrages
in ,the South Seas: "On tho 7th
April last the Pacific arrived at Her
mit Island, where Hernstcin & Co.
had, established a copra station in
charge of a European trader. At
half-past 10 A.M,on .that day ,thc
vessel camo to anchor within 160
yards of the shore, when it was seen
J that tho station had been burned to
the ground. Within1 a few minutes
afterwards a 'rifle 'ahd musket fire
'was opened frohv each side of the
bay and from the "ffontlandiug, by
foes who were concealed In the map
grove scrub and behind trees. The
bullets hulled tho vcaseVJ and-whlstl-ed
over her so rapidly and so un
comfortably close to the, men's heads
that they wcreJ(. unable to weigh
anchor in response , to the captain's
command. Fire was returoed-by-the
crew, but ineffectually, as the pre
sence of anenemjr waionly indicat
ed by tho report of- their rifles, and
their whereabouts only by the puffs
of smoke accompanying the dii
charge. Finding-that the leadeotbail

range, when be examined damages,
found no one hurt, and onlv the

not to .any great or dangerous
depths'." - "
On the 21st of the same month the
a.s. Friar, also belonging to.Hcrn
stein & Co., from Hongkong to Mu
tupi, called, at Hermit Island, and
the captain with a boat's crew pro
ceeded to land. There was no sign
or sound to betoken the presence of
an( enemy ; but no sooner bad the
captain ' jumped' torA shoro than a
voley rang out from the mangrove
scrub, and he was stretched lifeless
on the beach, with five or six bullets
in 'his body. The boat's crew back
ed water, and pushed off at once,
receiving in their retreat two volleys
from eight or ten natives, who came
down to the wntcr-brtgc and fired,
some 17 bullets passThg through the
planking of the boat, although, for
tunately, ' without much damage.
The mate took charge of the Vessel,
bnd took her on to Mutupi. Ono of
the seamcu nn the boat was shot
through the left thigh, the bullet
lodging in his abdomen; but al
though his was at first considered a
fatal case", he was lapidly progress
ing , to health and strength when
Captain Snclise left Mtitupi. ,
Tho other day one of the clerks
in a Washington street store dis
covered tho porter crammed among
the boxes with pen, ink and paper
" So you'ro writing a letter, eh,
Collins?" nuoried tho clerk.
" Yes, Pin writing to tho. old roan;
ho lives out in Buffalo."
So saying, lja,hanlod up.'tha half
written letter for 'inspection! and
after ho had perused it tho clerk re-
"I see yon spoil jug 'gupf,' now
"Of course not," replied the
potter: but you see I am writing to,
the old man, and he always spoils it
thati way. If I put two gV on he
-would think that I was putting
on style over biro, and forgetting
that I saw his son He's good
bo arted, and I don't want to nurt
So tho letter wont off with only
on " g at tho end of " gugg."
