The Salvation Army.
The Salvation Army banners arc
'waving high in England. In Lon
don and all the English centies this
church militant dwells in large halls,
amphitheatres, circuses and teuts,
and hold continued religious services
to suit everybody's time. They of
ten have meetings of 5,000 people
in a hall, and sometimes 10,000 out
side who cannot gain admission on
account of the crowds. Their fin
ancial condition appears to be good,
for they build largo halls for them
selves. The v onder where they get
tho money from ceases, when a
"well wisher" in New Zealand sends
the Genu ill a draft for 81,000 to be
devoted to this glorj' of the cause.
So liberal contributions pour in from
all quarters of the earth, even to its
Prof Skoda 's Tailor
Tho lato Prof. Skoda, one of
Vienna's greatest surgeons, had un
til a year or two beloie his death,
wore garments of a most unfashion
able cut; the trousers were baggy,
and the coats moit ingeniously tli
fitted. His friends often joked with
him about the mottur, and Sko la
bore their fun good-naturedly, with
out, however, making any explan
ation. One day a friend observed
that ho was much moro stylishly
clad than usual.
" This is an unhopod-for pleasnre,
Skoda," said he, ' to sco you for
once propei ly dressed."
" Say no more," said tho surgeon,
gravely. " Ho who has made my
clothing for all these years you havo
know me did not, it is true, give it
a very fashionable shape, but ho let
me havo it long before I had achiev
ed success, and he never pressed
mo for money when he suspected
that I was presbed for it myself.
How would you do, my friend
k'avo such a man for one who
merely cut cloth in a different
'' But why, then, do you leave
now?" inquired the friund.
"He is dead," said Skoda.
Visit of a gentleman to the Ku
shan monastery, near Foo Chow:
" There are about '200 priests of
Buddha in resideuce. I had an in
terview with one of these priests,
who, during the picvious night, had
deliberately held his linger in a flame
and burnt it slowly away. Dr Os
good of Foo Chow, was present dur
ing the whole time and baw it done,
but wot not allowed to interfere
cither during or after the operation.
This man held his finger for an hoar
and a half in the flame, and burnt it
down to below the second joint.
The wound was very bad when I saw
it, and the room actually smelt of
roasted meat. I held his hand and
examined it, but was not allowed to
bind it up in any way. The poor
fellow seemed cxhansed and ill, but
smiled faintly when we came in.
His ambition is to burn two more
fingers off dining the next two
years. In another part of the build
ing we saw men having Ihcir heads
branded with jed-hot iions. I
could not leain what the special oc
casion was, but suppose it must
have born some annual festival at
which this particular kind of self
mqrtification is, practised. "
