How satisfactorily a witness an
swered a cross-examining lawyer is
thus told by a New York paper : "It
was a sad thing for Lottie Davis
when she put out her washing on the
clothesline of her South Fifth Ave
nue abode. 1'ctcrsou Knapp was
there on watch, and, it is alleged,
carried off the raiment, part and
parcel. At all events, a policeman
arrested him for the offence, and he
went to the Jefferson Market police
court prepared to maintain liis inno
cence by counsel. Lottie was there,
too, and in spite of numerous trying
intenuptjons from the counsel, she
got down to the point in her narra
tive where she discovered Peterson
longingly eyeing tho clothes as she
hung them out. 'Dat brack niggar,'
she said, urgently apostrophising
the prisoner, 'he stood dah wif an
ole clay pipe shoved whar it'd do do
mos' good, and he n-pulhV as if
he'd like to split. But the way he
looked at dcrn clothes was quite
'nough to show any rcason'ble
'oomans dat they war'n't safe.'
'Come witness,' quoth counsel sar
castically, 'tell us just what kind of
a look that is. 'Oh, you git out!'
was the Bnappish rejoinder. 'I in
sist on that question, How did the
prisoner look, to convey the impres
sion that the clothes were in danger?
"Witness was ready with another tart
reply, but his Honor said, 'Come,
you must answer. How did he look?'
The witness seemed puzzled, 'Did he
look,' asked his Honor, glancing
round for a smile 'did he look like
like counsel, for instance?' 'Oh,
'deed, no, sir!' replied the witness.
'If he looked dc least bit like dat
gemman, dero wouldn't been no
robbery at all.' 'Ah,' said the coun
sellor, 'how's that?' 'I'd made
udder an angements." 'Indeed!' ho
continued, smiling. 'What might
they have been?' Why, if he looked
at all like j'ou does, I wouldn't have
dar'd to hang dem clothes out at
