Couldn't Fool Him.
A gentleman called his servant
one (lay and informed him ho wished
him to learn the names of the first
books in the Bible.
' Now," said he, " I will tell you
the first one, and during the day
I will ask you what it is, to see if
you remember; it is Genesis."
Later in the day Bob was called,
but he could not remember what
it was.
" Now," said his master, " I have
a way to impress it on your mind so
bo you cannot forget it. Now, Bob.
wc have an old horse in the stable.
What do we call it?"
" Jenny."
" Correct. And we have a little
girl in the kitchen, what do you call
her?"
" Sis."
" Very well; now put the two to
gether and you have Jcnny-Sis-Gcncsis.
I think you can remember
it until to-morrow."
" Yah! yah! Yes, sah."
The next morning Boh was sum
moned to appear before his master.
'Good-morning, Bob; can you
give me the name of the first book
ju the Bible this morning?"
" Yes, sah, sure."
" Well, what is it?"
"Yah! yah! Can't fool dts chicken
dfs morning on dat-it is de old boss,
sah!"
The ways of the swindler arc as
numerous as leaves in the forest.
Here are two very neat dodges : A
young doctor, who found himself in
a Dakota villiagc without a dollar to
pay a heavy board bill, concocted a
plau by which a wandering tramp
played the part of asmall-pox patient,
and the doctor vaccinated the entire
population of the town with some in
nocuous acid at 82 each. The swin
dle was disevcred too late, for the en
terprising physician and his bogus
patient skipped out with 8300 each.
A "Western circus manager arranged
to have a wax baby dropped from a
second-story window in every town
which his show visited, just in time
to be caught by one of his athletes.
The performance was succcsful sev
eral tunes, and crowds went to hec
the hero of the rescue, until the news
papers exposed the trick.
"Never take a leap in the dark,"
said an old adage. Many a man, if
he takes it at all, h obliged to take
his sleep in the dark.
It may be all right for lovers, but
" two souls with but asingle thought"
could never conduct the editoiial de
partment of a newspaper.
All the legend:! connected with
southern bloodhounds have to give
way when a tramp throws the ani
mals over a fence as fast as they
come up to him.
When a couple aro newly married,
they feel as if they could devour
each other. After a lupbe of a year
or feo their regrot is that they did
not follow their first inclination.
How to keep bees keep the rud
der end away from you.
