THURSDAY, SEPT. 7, 1882
Paths, July 29. Another event
that eclipses .Egyptian nf fairs is the
bleeping beauty in a hospital.
Seventy-five days ago a pretty young
woman, aged twenty five., was found
at midnight by the police asleep on
one of the scats of an external boul
evard. She was conveyed to the
Btalion as drunk as drunk and in
capable. -On being searched a scap
tilar was found around her neck and
two religious medals. As she did
not wake next morning, fche was con
veyed to the hospital, where she has
Mill lain, in all the attitude of death,
save that she respires rapidly. She
has been fed on soup. Doctors from
far and near came to peep at the
phenomenon. It wasdiscoveied that
ehc was two months enceinte when
admitted, and a few days ago she
was prematurely confined of a dead
horn infant. Hut the pains of child
birth never roused her; she slept all
the same. The famous Dr. Charcot,
the highest aulhoiity of the day on
nervous diseases, was called in. He
recommended a cold douche. The
first bath produced no effect ; the
hccond, however, did, and Mm pro
mises in a little time to awaken up
like Rip Van Winkle. Attracted by
the accounts published, as strolling
player called nud recognized in the
patient her daughter, disappeared
fiinco seven years. J lie patient ap
pearcd to know bet mother, as she
pressed her hand and cried, but
never uttered an intelligible word
The prodigy, when a child, experi
enced the first attack of lethargy
when the Prussians bombarded the
capital. ' Among other distinguished
foreigners who visited the sleeper
was Mr. IJarnum. That looks like
business. With her and Jumbo,
Barnum might bo excused by his
temperance friends for indulging' in
a straight drink.
A gun invented by a man in Riley,
Miss., is, if it is what it is claimed
to be, one of the most wonderful in
ventions of the age. It can be fired
from ten to twenty thousand times a
minntc, can be elevated or depressed
or turned to the light or left, in
clined to cover the slope of a lull,
contracted so a3 to bring the fire to
bear upon one spot or expanded to
cover a wide area, and all with the
greatest case and in the simplest
manner, by merely turning a crank.
Senator Hill was buried at Atlanta
Saturday afternoon, August 19th.
There was an escort of tho At
lanta Bar and Congressional Com
mittee. There was a long lino of
carnages, and nearly 20,000i people
vvoro on tho fitreots and in the pro
cession. A dispatch from Melbourne says:
Bishop Goold of tho Roman Cntliolie
diocese horc, was shot at and slightly
.Avounded. His nssailant, named
.O'Farroll, was arrested. Ho is the
brother of tho man who attempted
to assassinate the Duko of Edinburgh
t Sydney, March 18, 1808.
