little children are present, is simply
abominable. It is not a mere weak
ness: it is a deadly wrong.
5 S wealing is unprofitable.
11 What does the devil pay you for
bwearing ? " " Pay me ! why noth
ing, ol course ! " " Well, you do
vroi k cheap : to lay nside the char
acter of u gentleman, to inllict so
much pain on your friends and all
decent people, to suffer the loss of
your own bclf-rcspcct, and to risk
your own soul you certainly work

Profanity docs no man any good.
No man is the richer, or the wiser,
or the happier for it. It helps no
ouo's education or manners. It
commends no one to good society.
It is disgusting to the refined ; ubonii
nablo to the good j insulting to
those with whom you associate;
degrading to the mind ; unprofitable,
needless and injurious in society ;
nwftil in the sight of God. It is a
terrible sin which endangers the loss
of our soul, and deforms your man
hood. The above has been in our pos
ecssion some days, but we have been
unable to publish it for want of
room and other troubles. Ed.
General Butler is the author of
a sensation. In cruising about in
bis yacht, he touched at Halifax,
Nova Scotia, where he purchased
a schooner named Conquest, which,
it is said, was victualed for a crew
of forty men for one year, although
she cleared for Madagascar, with
only captain, mate and two boys on
board. It was suspected the bal
ance of the crew would be picked up
nt some other point. The vessel is
described as "gloomy, black and
pit atical-looking, with cxtraordimuy
high bulwarks, well fitted to hide
Bniall guns, with which it is sus
pected she is Mocked." The inquiiy
runs, " What i3 she intended fof a
slaver, a pirate or a trader ? " Gen
eral Butler has an eye to business,
and no doubt understands what he
is about. When ho makes a ven
ture it generally pays.
