Making the Most of the Hone.
In Franco, when a horse lias
reached the age of twenty or thirty,
it is destined or a chcmjcal factory;
it is first rolioved of its hair, which
serves to stuff cushions and saddles;
then it is slaughtered and skinned;
the hoofs servo to make combs.
Next the carcass is put in a cylinder
and cooked by steam at a prcssuro
of three atmospheres; a cock is
opened, which allows tho steam to
be run off; then tho remains aro-cut
up, tho leg bones aro sold to' make
knife-handles, etc., and the coarsor
parti the ribs, tho head, etc. are
converted into animnl-blaok and
glue. Tho first aro calcined in
cylindors, and the vapors when con
clonscd from tho chiof source of car
bonate of amouia, which constitutes
tho baso of nearly all tho ammoniac&l
salts.
There is an animal oil yielded
-which makes a capital inseoticido
and a vermifuge. To make glue
the bones are dissolved in muriatic
acid, which takos away the phos
phate of lime, tho soft rcsiduo retain
ing tho shapo of the hono is dis
solved in boiling water, cast into
squares and dried on nets. The
phosphate of limo, acted upon by
sulphuric acid and calcined with car
bon, prqduccs phosphorus for lucifer
matches! Tho remaining flesh is
distilled to obtain tho carbonato of
nmmonia; thn resulting mass is poun
ded up with, potash, then mixed with
old nails mid iron of every descrip
tion; tho wholo is calcined, and
yields magnificent yellow crystal
prussiate of potash, with which
tissues are dyed a Prussian-blue,
and iron transferred into steel ; it
also forms the basis of cyanide of
potassium and prussic nd, the two
most terrible poisons known in che
mistry. t3T A full lino of Boy's, Youth's and
