Do yon know that the story of
,1iiKierciin is one of the oldest stories
in tho world? It hiisbcen told to de
lighted youngsters for thousands of
yenrs, and by almost all raecs of
people. There arc, of course, some
little differences in the story, as told
ly different peoples ; the French, for
instance, have a cow for tho good
fairy, and when tho animal was about
to be killed bhe told Cinderella (or
rather Cedrcnsettc, 'which is her
French name) to colloct her bones
into her hide, and to wish over them
for anything .the wanted. As the
Scotch tell it, a dying queen gave
her daughter "a little red calfy,"
which was killed by the cruel step
mother, and over its bones the child,
l.ashineoat as sho is called, wished
for her three dresses.
Steam on Street Cars.
After the most faithful efforts of
the managers of the street cars in
Palis tosubstitutc steam power for
liorses, they have given up the job.
For live years they have used steam,
during which period they tried
tweuty-onc different forms of en
gines. The companies now discard
fcteaiu and return to horse flesh as on
1lio whole the safest, most economic
al, aud most satisfactory. It would
seem ns if the experience ought to
be of value to inventors ; that there
can be no doubt. Who will win the
prize by the invention of a steam
street car that wdl successfully com
pete with animal?
