The date for the coronation of the
Czar of Russia is rapidly drawing
nigh ; nntl the condition of Moscow,
even at the present time, is sugges
tive of the cordial feeling of the in
habitants, and of the enthusiastic
loyalty which will, later, be demons
trated in the presence of the Em
peror of all the- Rttssias. Scventy-
fivn thousand picked troops now
garrison the city merely, of course,
to add to tltc splendor of the wel
coming spectacle ; and the detective
force has been so increased, that
oven the man who chops your wood
for a square) meal and a pannikin of
vodki is, in nine cases out of ten, n
member of the very plain clothes
constabulary. The triumphal arches
will be composed exclusively of
chevaux-de-frisc and bayonet stacks
which will have a pretty effect in
the sunshine ; and while the corona
tion ceremonial takes place, and the
central figure is bombarded by an
enthusiastic populace, Alexander the
Second will be uwuitincr tho issue of
events in a friendly suburban coal-J
cellar. We have also learned that
thrco inotiths prior to the coronial
(yes, corbnial's the word) ceremony,
such is the confidence of His Maj
esty in the affection of his subjects
that lie always puts on in the morn
ing a suit of clothes hud out for
somebody else, and before going to
bed sneaks down in tho kitchen and
bribes tho cook witli a kopeck or
two to change sleeping apartments
until tho morning. Tilings, however,
arc much quieter than they used to
be. A sawdust-stuffed clllyy placed
in a chair in what is popularly con
sidered to be the Emperor's private
garden, was found last week to liavo
received, after one whole morning's
exhibition, only fivo slugs in the re
gion of the heart ; whereas a month
ago, after reclining iu the Czar's
favorite attitude for half an hour,
there was a rattle and a crash iu the
air, and all ttiat was left of the
figure was a helmet spike, half an
eye-glass, and the order of the Iron
Crown. And yet the wholo time the
misguided Nihilists were pounding
away nt the effigy, the original was
administering the government of his
.umpire in the drain.
