A Scared Professor. There is no use disguising tlio fact tlmt tlio boys who attend our colleges nro pretty tough cases on gene ral principles.- Not that they would commit crimes, or do thing that arc particularly dishonorable, but they arc as full of the old Nick as they can hold. You tnkc the best boy you can find in tho public schools one who had no religious training and seem to havo a nious turn of mind, and who is so good that all ihc other boys think ho is booked for Heaven, and send hiin off to col lege, and you want to watch him. Tho chances are that ho will como back with a knowledge of draw poker that will paralyze an old gambler, and ho will bo sure to bo a leader in all tho deviltry that is coiner on. An illustration of this was furnished a short time ago In ono of our Stato colleges devoted to turning out pious young men. Tho class in elocution was furnish with a professor from a distant city, who was very thorough in his met hods, but ho didn't amount to any thing at handling boys. Ho seemed to look at thorn in the class-room appcalingly as much as to beg them not to play any mokey work on him. Tho Coys saw ho was afraid of them, and they laid for him. Thay got into a discussion over tho proper way to render a passage from tho poem, "The Boy Stood on tho Burning Deck," when ono of tho students called tho other a liar. The profes sor hold up his hand iti horror, and begged them to bo seated, when the young man who had been called a linr drew a revolver nnd shot at the other student, who fell to tho floor an alleged corpse. Tlio professor was wild, an at thispoiutd the lights wont out and every student drew a revolver and began firing blank cartridges in tho air. Somo wore armed with putty balls and eggs, and at each discharge something wouiu siricK tnu proiessor, nnu no thought ho was full of holes, A window was raised, and by tho light made by tho exploding cartridges, a pair of coat-tails and legs could bo seen going out ami thu proessor lan ded head iirst on somo liluc bushes. They rushed to tho window, and tho poor inuii, bruised and bleeding, and as scared as itwaspossiblo for a man to bo, was running for dear life. Tho next morning ho took tho train for home, with n black eye, and clothes that looked as though some thing had been scruped oft" of them, nnd tho faculty of tho college will not know what has become of their professor of elocution till they read this. Tho boys go about their stu dies as though nothing has happen cd, but thoy aro trying to think up some now deviltry. Boys will bo boys , and there is no way you can Crovuut it, unless you break tchir aoks. Peck's Sun. CHARLES ($$ HAMMER, Manufacturer and dealer In all kinds of Saddlery and Harness.
