A short time ago, a pig with a
liuinim lrand growing out of its back
was on czhibiton horc, wo quote tho
following from tho Melbourne Atc
of August Dth, to show that similar
frcakH of nature nro not uncommon:
A considerable amount of mer
riment was caused at tho meeting
of tho council of the Notional
Agricultural Society yesterday on
tho receipt of a 'letter, which was
ns follows: "Sir, I take tho liberty
in writing to you wishing to know
if you would allow me to have 10
feet of ground at tho forthcoming
exhibition, on tho 11th of August,
to exhibit tho following freaks fo
nature; One goose with three legs,
one gander also with three legs, ono
Spanish rooster with formation of
hand and arm growing from the
spino of its back; also, a New
Zealand water fowl." Tho secretary
also submitted another letter, in
which tho writer stated; "Having a
' bullock which was born without leg
or shoulder, and said by many
veterinary surgeons of Victoria to be
a great freak of nature, I beg leave
to exhibit him at tho National
Agricultural Society's Show, on
Monday, tho 14th inst, and following
days. I will have a brass band in
If all that is said about this
modification of the punkah is true
it is well worth attention in this
country, whatever the season may
be. Attached to the frame of the
punkah is an endless blind, passing
round rollers at the top und bottom.
' Tho bottom roller is in a trough
containing a caustic alkali solution.
At every swing of the punkah a
wheel and ratchet arrangement
causes tho rollers to revolve, thus
drawing tho sheet or blind through
tho solution. The wet sheet or
swinging to and fro takes up from
the air the sulphurous and carbonic
acid gases, as well as somo orgainie
matter. -Brought to the test of
experiment, says the Enquirer, this
plan appears to work successfully.
In a small room 17 feet by 15 feet
and only 8 foot high 50 jots of a gas
stove were set burning for an hour,
with the window and doors of tho
room closed, and to make it still
further unfit for human life a quarter
of an ounce of sulphur was burned
in it. Tho punkah charged with
caustic soda was hero set to work,
and in 10 minute the temperature
was reduced fioiu 85 to 75 Fah
renheit, and tho air was made
sufficiently fresh and pleasant for
