WHAT IT COSTS.
A gcntlemont was walking in
Regent's Park, in London, and lie
met n man whose only homo was in
tlic poorhouso. Ho had como out to
take tlio air, and excited tlio gentle
man's interested attention.
"Well, my friend," said thogcnUc-
man, iiito conversation, "it is a pity
that a man liko you should bo
(8ituated-icro you arc. Now may
I ask now old you arc ?"
Tlio man said ho was eighty years
"Had you any trado baforo ,you
'Yes, I was a carpenter."
' Did'you use intoxicating drink ?"
"No, oh no, I only took my beer;
never anything stronger; nothing
but my beer."
. , "How much did you bocr come to
"Oh, a sixpence a day, I suppose."
"For how long a time ?"
0')Voll,l suppose for sixty .years."
The gentleman had taken out
his notebook, and he continued
figuring with his pencil while he
went on talking with the man.
"Now, let mo tell you," said lie,
us he finished his calculations, "how
much' that bocr cost you, my man.
You can go over the figures yourself."
And the gentleman demonstrated
that the mone', a sixpence a day for
sixty years, expended in beer,
would if it had been saved and
placed at interest, have yielded him
nearly eight hundred dalhus a ycar,i
or, an s income of fifteen, dollars a
week for self-support.
"Let me tell you how much a
gallon of whiskey cost," said a judgo
after trying a case. "Ono gallon of
whibkoy made two men murderers;
it made two wives widows; and
made eight children orphans." Oh!
it's a costly thing. Dr. Richard
The Nature says: "A curious
nml little known experiment, showing
tthCi (resistance pf air in gnus, is
described by Prof. Daniel Collation,
of Geneva, In a recent letter to M.
Mc'isens, (Bulletin. Bclg. Acad.,
No. 6. ) , Ho fully charged with com
pressed air the hollow iron breech
of an air-gun, Serving as a reservoir.
Having screwed up the gun, he intro
duced n round lead ball, running
freely, but nearly filling up the bore;
then placing the gun vertical, he
seized the upper end and pressed his
thumb vigorously on the mouth.
The gun was then 'fired' by an
assistant, while the thumb remained
in position, nml tlio ball was heard
to fall back in the boro. Thereupon
after recharging the breech, and with
the same ball ho shot the latter at a
pine board 0.1 inch thick, or a pane
of grass, and it passed through. M.
Colhulon says the experiment is
without danger if the operator is
mire, of the strength of his thumb, if
the gun is moro than 32 inches long,
and if the ballU spherical and nearly
fills tho gun, in which it much act
like a piston. Tho prcssuto of the
thumb must cause an hermetic
closure of tho bore or the thumb
may receive scriousi njury."
