Intelligence has been received in
this city of the death of Cornelius
Kooiimanscluip, in Rio Janeiro,
Brazil. Deceased was a resident of
this city, whore he was well known.
He was a native qi Holland and be
tween fifty-five and sixty years of
ii'rc. lie resided' here since about
1850, nnd watf formerly a merchant
doing a lnrge importing trade, in
Oriental goods. About 18C7 he rc
tiied, nnd became a contractor for
Chinese labor, or wiiiicse iihiiubiu
tion ngent. He obtained Bcvcral
large consignments of laborers for
different countries and for the l nil
road companies. A few months ago
ho went to Rio Janeiro for the pur
pose of negotioating w ith the Urazili
nn Government for a lot of coolies.
Ho was married, but had no children.
His widow resides in this city.
A gentleman wishing some bushes
removed from his garden, told his
gardener to pull them up by the
roots. Sometime after he went into
the garden, and found the gardener
digging trenches round the bushes.
"Why, George," he said, "you need
not dig around thoso small bushes in
thnt way I 1 am sine you aic strong
enough to pull them up by the roots."
"OK, yes, sir," replied the gardener,
"I am strong enough; but I must
dig a little bc'foro I can get hold of
the roots. If you had told ine to
pull them up by the branches, I
