OVERTAXING THE BRAIN.
In n recent lecturo on "Brain
Ilcnltli," at Edinburgh, Dr. J. Batty
Tuko said that ns a matter of fact,
it wns not niv easy tiling to overtask
tlio energies of the bngin by work.
It wns not work, but worry, that
killed the brain. But breakdown
from overstrain . did occasionally
take place, and tlio first rcnllyim
portant symtotn was sleeplessness;
when that sot in thcro was cattso
for nlarm. Loss of sleep was brought
about thus: "When tho brain was
bcimr actively exorcised, thcro was
an iucrenso of blood in its -vessels
this was spoken- of as "functional
hypcrcemia." Ifthoy continued th
exercise of tho, brain powers too
long, there was a tendency for the
blood to remain in too great quan
tity from tho cells becoming ex
hausted and not being able; to
control tho vessels. In sleep tho
amount of blood was diminished,
and sleep could not be procured if
this functional hypcrocmia persisted.
In tho . absence of Bleep, tho cells
could not recover themselves, and
their activity became unpaired
Headache, loss of apuct:
general listlcssness followed. 'As
soon as a child or young person
developed continuous headache,'
work should bo discontinued at
