TUESDAY, MAKCII 13, 1883.
When a wan nsks a woman to
marry him, ho nsks n good deal. Ho
nsks her to lenvo her father's bouse,
nround which cluster nil the asso
ciations of childhood, youth, nnd
womanhood, and go out into n lifo
which she knows not of, nnd make n
homo for him, her husband. He
asks her to give up her very notnc
nnd tnko his, nnd to become bound
to him by irrevocable tics till death
do them part. A woman who mnrries
must generally, in lnrge measure,
give up every pursuit except thnt of
ordering her husband's home. She
must depend upon him for means
wherewith to make n home for licr
Bclf ns well ns for him. Too often
what he gnins while she is laboring
for both is regarded as his, while
what she expends in the home is
regarded as given to her. "We do
not wish to discourage any young
women from matrimony, but we do
wish to set before young men the
completeness with which wives are
expected to merge their lives in
those of thoir husbands, and so to
excite in every generous breast the
purpose not to be outdone in practi
cal self-sacriiice and devotion. Is it
much, in view of nil you expect of
your wives, that you should make it
reasonably sure that they and the
children will not bo left penniless
by your death?
A preacher raising his eyes from
his desk in the midst of his sermon,
was paralyzed with amazement to sec
liis rude loy in the gallery pelting
the hearers in the pews below with
kor.sc-chcstnuts. But while the good
man was preparing a frown of re
proof, the young hopeful cried out,
"You 'tend to your preaching, dad
dy; I'll keenp 'em awake."
